South Africa has one of the most progressive abortion laws on the continent. But having a legal right doesn't necessarily mean having real access. For many women - particularly Black women and women from poorer and marginalised communities - accessing safe abortion care can still mean navigating long distances, limited services at public healthcare facilities, stigma from healthcare workers, religious objections and a lack of reliable information about where to go for help. Why are women still turning to informal channels for abortion medication when safe and legal services exist? We are in conversation with Nolethu Ndude who is a social entrepreneur, public speaker and sexual and reproductive health and rights advocate as we explore if this is simply a matter of people trying to profit illegally from medication  or does it also expose deeper failures in our reproductive healthcare system?
