South Africa’s national police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, is set to return to his duties on Monday, 19 October, after President Cyril Ramaphosa lifted his precautionary suspension. This follows the withdrawal of criminal charges against him relating to alleged contraventions of the Public Finance Management Act in connection with a controversial SAPS health-services tender. The charges were formally withdrawn by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court in September after the National Director of Public Prosecutions found there were no reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution.

What does Masemola’s reinstatement mean for public confidence in the police? With questions about accountability, leadership and the integrity of the criminal justice system still being raised, can the SAPS rebuild public trust while addressing concerns about misconduct within its own ranks? To help us unpack this story we speak to Political commentator, Lethlogonolo Mosuwe.
