It has been 75 years since the Group Areas Act became law on July 7, 1950. The acts assigned racial groups to different residential and business sections in urban areas. Nine years ago, at least 144 mental healthcare users died when the termination of the Gauteng Department of Health’s contract with long-term psychiatric care hospital Life Esidimeni resulted in more than 1,400 patients being moved to ill-equipped and unlicensed non-government organisations. A year after the inquest ruling, the NPA has yet to pursue Life Esidimeni case prosecutions. We speak to  SECTION 27 CEO Sasha Stevenson.
