Unpacking the copyright amendment bill

View descriptionShare

The copyright amendment bill seeks to update South Africa's four-decade-old copyright law.

The Department of Trade and Industry argues it will protect authors, composers, artists and other professionals in the publishing sector, and that it will improve access to educational materials.

It has also previously argued the Bill will address a lack of formalisation in the creative industry. The bill has also provoked a number of negative reactions in the wake of its passing before the National Assembly, with summits and symposiums by Copyright elitists claiming that the Bill will infringe on their copyrights.

We speak to ReCreate ZA who support the Copyright Amendment Bill and explore what benefits creative practitioners will get if the bill is passed.

We are also joined by a member of the Music Publishers Association of South Africa to understand why they want the current form of the bill to be amended.
