As opposed to our parents or grandparents, when one chooses to enter into holy matrimony the decision is more often than not based on achieving social status, economic stability, and safety. The tides have however changed and modern-day marriage has evolved into what some psychology researchers dub as the “self-expressive era,” a time where we expect our partners to not only meet our basic needs of everlasting love and sense of belonging but also help support us on our journey to self-discovery and fulfilment. We speak to young married couples: Nqubeko Maja, Nelson Maja and Nthabiseng Mathontsi as we unpack modern day marriage expectation and what the role of a Makoti / Mokgwenyana is.
