Food justice reporter for Daily Maverick, Naledi Sikhakhane has been tracking the prices of 14 food items since 2022 in a simulation of what a person who receives only the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant as an income would be able to purchase. The food basket check suggests that basic foods have become unaffordable to Social Relief of Distress grant recipients with a sharp increase in the price of food items such as cabbage, while staples such as rice, flour, yeast and sugar beans have experienced a marginal price.
