#AfricaMondays: How Ghana and Nigeria police handle domestic violence cases

View descriptionShare

Dr. Abena Yalley joins @ThorisoMaloka on the line to speak about her extensive research into how Ghana & Nigeria police handle domestic violence cases.

The fight against domestic violence is nothing new. For years women have been creating awareness around this issue, but it seems to be falling on deaf ears.  We know here in South Arica there has been countless protests and shutdowns for government institutions and men to stop gender based violence.

Today we are joined by Dr Abena Yalley.  She writes  on domestic violence in Ghana and Nigeria. Since the 1970s feminist movement for the support of abused women under the appellation “Battered Women’s Movement”, the struggle against domestic violence has continued. In Ghana, for example, national records reveal that one-third of women have been victims of domestic violence. In Nigeria, 33% of women aged 15-49 have experienced either physical or sexual violence in a domestic setting.
