We spoke to Siphumelele Zondi, multimedia lecturer at DUT, about Africa’s growing “AI for Africa” movement—an effort to build homegrown, culturally relevant AI solutions for the continent. From improving healthcare and agriculture to strengthening education and governance, AI offers transformative potential. Initiatives like the AI for Africa Foundation and AU-led programmes are training talent and building ethical, locally informed innovation. But challenges remain, including data gaps, skills shortages, and limited infrastructure. Africa’s goal: to shape its own AI future rather than rely on imported systems.
