Africa’s democratic landscape, suggesting that the nation could be heading toward its most
contentious local government elections since 1996. According to Duvenage, the risk of
significant unrest remains high unless authorities take immediate and decisive action to address and curb the rising tide of political violence.
These concerns are underscored by a troubling series of recent events, which have seen a
surge in targeted killings involving political figures across the country. By highlighting these
incidents, Duvenage emphasizes the urgent need for intervention to ensure the stability and
safety of the upcoming electoral process.

June 30 is no longer just a protest date; it has become a major pressure point in South Africa&#39;s
already tense debate about illegal immigration, border control, unemployment, crime, and the
state's ability to enforce its own laws.
The core difficulty is that illegal immigration is, by nature, hidden and hard to measure.
Estimates of undocumented migrants in South Africa range widely—from about 2.5 million to as
many as 12 million—depending on the source and methodology used. That uncertainty matters
deeply because it leaves plenty of room for fear, politics, and public frustration to fill the gaps.

The impact of the protest on the economy, informal traders and public  service.

Anti-immigrant protesters were on the streets across South Africa today after their deadline for
undocumented foreigners to leave the country expired at midnight. Despite the tense
anticipation, police across the country reported by first light that they had not yet recorded any
major incidents linked to the planned action.
The looming threat has already sparked a massive displacement crisis. More than 25,000
foreigners have been bussed out of the country, while thousands more have fled their homes to
seek safety. These individuals are currently taking refuge in repatriation centres, consulates, and
makeshift camps.
In response to the crisis, the state has deployed thousands of police officers and soldiers
nationwide to prevent the protests from turning violent. This security operation has already cost
R600 million and counting. The massive deployment aims to avoid a repeat of the devastating
2008 xenophobic attacks, during which mobs torched homes, looted shops, and killed 62
people, sending tens of thousands fleeing for their lives.
