Many Black women grew up in homes where survival came before softness. In many families, mothers, grandmothers, and older sisters became the providers, protectors, disciplinarians, and decision-makers, not necessarily because they wanted to, but because circumstances demanded it. Whether it was absent fathers, economic hardship, violence, or simply the need to keep the household running, many girls learned early that being vulnerable wasn't always safe. Those survival skills often become part of who we are. We become independent, self-sufficient, and always prepared to carry the load. But here's the question: when life becomes more stable, when healthy relationships, financial security, or emotional safety finally arrive, why is it so difficult to put those survival instincts down? We are in conversation with Dr Keitumetse Mashego who is a Clinical Psychologist and a Performance and Mindset Life Coach.
