DRAG CULTURE IN SA

View descriptionShare

Drag culture, born from the underground ballroom scenes of New York City in the mid-20th century, has evolved into a vibrant and celebrated form of performance art and self-expression worldwide. Emerging from marginalized communities, particularly Black and Latino LGBTQ+ groups, drag initially served as a means of challenging societal norms and exploring identity through elaborate costumes, exaggerated makeup, and theatrical personas. The roots of drag are deeply intertwined with the quest for visibility, acceptance, and empowerment within LGBTQ+ communities, often serving as a defiant celebration of queerness and resilience.
