As of January 2026, South African social grant recipients—specifically the elderly—are facing what advocacy groups call a "humanitarian crisis in slow motion." While the Old Age Grant increased slightly at the start of the 2025/26 financial cycle, the real-world value of this money has been eroded by a surge in the cost of basic needs. However, in the third quarter of 2024, there was an upsurge in activity and jobs in construction, largely in the informal sector.
