This movement is a cry against the erosion of life’s basic dignity, the plague of corruption and the growth of criminal networks that have turned Mozambique into a drug-trafficking crossroads, enriching an elite tied to the ruling party, Frelimo. South Africa has closed one of its busiest border crossings with Mozambique following violent post-electoral protests in the neighbouring country.  Thabiso Tena spoke with Professor Adriano Nuvunga is director of the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights in Mozambique and chairperson of the Southern Africa Human Rights Defenders Network

Trump’s four years in office were characterized by reports of a reportedly dismissive attitude towards Africans, most famously his reference to “s-hole countries” — but his supporters say he was the first to raise awareness about what a huge threat China is to US interests in Africa. “You will again see aggressive countering of Chinese influence in Africa,” Tibor Nagy, a former assistant secretary of State for African Affairs under Trump and a former ambassador to Guinea and Ethiopia. Thabiso Tema spoke with Prof Christopher Afoke Isike,  Professor of African Politics and International Relations in the Department of Political Sciences, University of Pretoria.

While Gauteng battles many self-inflicted water challenges, it will not face a Day Zero, where the taps will run dry, Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina assured on Tuesday. South Africa’s most populous province, amid a growing population and growing economy, which is also driving up demand, is experiencing significant water security challenges such as credit management issues, water losses and nonrevenue water, aging infrastructure, illegal connections, illegal mining and servitude encroachment. The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has spent over R10 billion a year on water infrastructure services since 2019.  Thabiso Tema spoke with David Mahlobo, Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation.
