The United States has imposed sanctions on the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and four of its senior commanders, accusing them of actively fuelling instability in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) through support for the M23 rebel group. In a statement, the United States Department of the Treasury alleged that Rwanda’s military has trained, equipped and fought alongside the March 23 Movement (M23), thereby undermining a US-brokered peace agreement signed in December between the governments of Kinshasa and Kigali.
