The Department of Social Development has deregistered more than 6,000 non-profit organisations for failing to submit annual reports, a legal requirement under the Nonprofit Organisations Act. This action is part of a broader initiative in which over 41,000 non-compliance notices have been issued to NPOs nationwide. In total, more than 200,000 organisations risk deregistration. The City of Johannesburg's City Power paid a politically connected businessman R12 million for a critical infrastructure project months before work was done, allegedly contravening the law, during a year in which the utility lost R2.8 billion. In March last year, Thato Moseme's company, Slide Exhibits, received R12 million to install public lighting in the City, despite junior staff warning that the payment flouted Treasury regulations that are in line with the Municipal Finance Management Act and the Public Finance Management Act. Tessa Dooms spoke with Isaac Mangena, City Power Spokesperson.

The government must save money by eliminating maladministration and corruption, standing committee on public accounts chair Songezo Zibi says. Parliament’s chairs of the finance cluster committees briefed the media yesterday ahead of the budget speech, which will be delivered today. This comes amid disagreements among political parties on the VAT increase, which saw the postponement of the speech last month. Tessa Dooms spoke with Songezo Zibi, SCOPA Chairperson.
