A "gold rush" has been ignited in the Payneville informal settlement near Springs, as hundreds of residents descend on a local kraal armed with spades and high hopes. The frenzy began last Monday following rumours that a community member discovered gold particles on the property. Driven by high unemployment and the desperate need for income, residents are paying the kraal owners for the right to dig. What started as a R20 fee on Monday jumped to R50 by Tuesday as the crowds grew.
