More than 35 dead in 12 weeks in shootouts with KZN police

View descriptionShare

In just eight weeks, 28 people died in shootouts with KwaZulu-Natal police. The victims of the shootings were among some of the province's most dangerous criminals, based on police statements from each incident. But the deadly gunfights are not new - since the start of October last year, 50 people were killed in police shootouts in the province. In just one month last year, between 6 October and 3 November, police killed 19 people during seven shootouts, News24 previously reported. At the time, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said that it was "overwhelmed" by investigations into deaths resulting from police shootouts in the province. Thabiso Tema speaks to Independent Crime Analyst and Former head of the Crime Information Analysis Centre at SAPS, Dr Chris De Kock.
