Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has stepped in at the eleventh hour on Friday morning to extend the validity of the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit (ZEP). This comes as the ZEP was meant to expire on Friday, causing panic among thousands of people trying to remain legally in the country. In the government gazette on 29 November, Schreiber said that the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit would remain valid until 28 November 2025 “in order for me to fulfill the duty placed on me by the Gauteng High Court to consult the affected ZEP holders and all other stakeholders on the future of the current dispensation”. Thabiso Tema spoke with Adv Simba Chitando, Zimbabwe Exemption Permit Holders Association.

The provincial government is moving closer to fostering collaboration between private and public sectors to improve Gauteng’s traffic lights. Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GPDRT) MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela launched the Adopt and Protect a Robot campaign in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs on Wednesday. As part of its wider turnaround strategy, South Africa’s biggest shopping mall, Fourways Mall, is pushing investment in its surrounding infrastructure and delivering on its promised changes. This investment includes enhancing traffic flow around the centre, where the group will now connect six key traffic lights in its vicinity to its backup power supply. Thabiso Tema spoke with Mike Pienaar, Fourways Mall Management.

Private sector asked to ‘adopt’ Gauteng traffic lights: Fourways Mall adopts traffic lights 

Trade union Solidarity reached a settlement with the basic education minister and the presidency at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) over the Basic Education Laws Amendment (Bela) Act this week.  On October 1, Solidarity initiated a dispute process through Nedlac to seek authorisation to undertake a protected protest to express opposition to sections 4 and 5 of the act. The sections, whose implementation President Cyril Ramaphosa delayed when he signed the Bela Act into law three months ago, deal with language and admission policies at public schools. Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said that he rejected the recent agreement with regards to the BELA Act by the minister of basic education and her partners.  Thabiso Tema spoke with Werner Human, Operational head of the Solidarity movement.
