Foodborne illnesses linked to the death of several children nationwide have been classified as a national disaster.  Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa announced during a media briefing in Pretoria on Thursday. This will make it easy and fast for the government to declare foodborne illnesses a national disaster if necessary.  Hlabisa added this will allow resources to be unleashed quickly to deal with the issue.  Justice Minister Thembi Simelane said the disaster classification encourages State entities, the private sector and communities to improve their risk-avoidance practices through adherence to food safety legislation, standards and procedures. The declaration was made under the Disaster Management Act, No. 57 of 2002. Thabiso Tema spoke with Foster Mohale, Health Department Spokesperson.
