South Africa plans to have at least 11 000 megawatts of electricity from renewables added to the grid by 2027. The country launched the National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA) on Monday. The new entity forms part of Eskom’s subsidiary and is set to play an important role in managing electricity transmission across the country. Energy and Electricity Minister Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa delivered a keynote address at the launch.
The NTCSA is one of Eskom’s legal separations of three entities, namely generation, distribution and transmission.
The unbundling was first announced in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s 2019 State of the Nation Address.
Ramokgopa described the launch as a positive step towards energy security and electricity availability. Kwena Moabelo spoke with Electricity Minister, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, and Development Finance Specialist and energy analyst, Ruse Moleshe.
