Ilegal mineworkers are continuing to resurface from mine shafts around Orkney in the North West. National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says more than 500 mineworkers have been arrested to date and the number is expected to increase. Police say the miners resurfaced due to starvation and dehydration after members of the police and the SANDF in the past week stopped communities from supplying them with food and water. Almost 600 illegal miners arrested after resurfacing due to hunger, dehydration in Orkney

At least 11 people were killed and 63 injured by gunfire in Mozambique during protests following disputed election results, medical associations reported. Demonstrations erupted after Mozambique's electoral commission declared the ruling party Frelimo the winner of the Oct. 9 election, extending its 49-year rule. Opposition groups and observers claimed the election was marred by fraud.  Thabiso Tema spoke with Prof Adriano Nuvunga, the director of the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights in Mozambique.

Deadly protest rage against Mozambique election result

With 70% of parents defaulting on child maintenance in the first two years of the court order, the department of justice and Social Justice Foundation are going ahead with a plan to blacklist defaulters with credit bureaus.  The two entities and the Consumer Profile Bureau signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday to have defaulting parents blacklisted. The move will take some time to come into full effect, however, as the state needs to develop a system to facilitate it.  Thabiso Tema spoke with Justice and Constitutional Development spokesperson, Tsekiso Machike.

Voters in Botswana have rejected the country’s long-serving governing party in a result that marks a political earthquake in the diamond-rich southern African nation. The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) - in power since independence in 1966 - has won only four parliamentary seats as of Friday afternoon. It will be replaced by the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC). In a phone call to UDC leader Duma Boko, President Mokgweetsi Masisi conceded and congratulated his opponent. Thabiso Tema spoke with Sonia Gaobolae, political analyst and communications and research manager for Botswana Centre for Public Integrity.
