Improving health equity in Africa

This Mandela day on the 18th of July, the non-profit organization Ladles of Love, has set out to break the Guinness World Record for the world's largest mosaic created entirely out of cans of food. The attempts will take place in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The food cans collected for the mosaic will be donated to communities in need and money raised will feed the hungry. For more on this initiative here's Mokgadi Itsweng, who is both a Ladles of Love Trustee and member of the global United Nations Chefs Manifesto.

While South Africa was the first country to adopt a constitution that explicitly prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, many trans people have or will experience some sort of discrimination in their lifetime. The trans community often struggle to access health care and face unfair discrimination in access to education, sport, employment, and social security. In South Africa the cost of mental health-related presenteeism has been estimated at over five-thousand US dollars per employee annually versus about eight-hundred-and-fifty-thousand per employee annually for absenteeism.
