Title: Peter and Judas: Losing Your Soul or Finding Your Way Back

Summary:

“What is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Jesus asked that question in Matthew 16, and this episode puts it to the test through the lives of Peter and Judas. Both failed him on the night of his arrest. Only one of them found his way back.

Judas sold Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, the price the law of Moses set on the life of a servant. When he realised what he had done, he tried to fix it by handing the money back, but he never went back to Jesus. Peter had seen Jesus transfigured on the mountain and promised he would die rather than deny him, yet before the rooster crowed he had denied knowing him three times. The difference came afterwards. On the shore of the Sea of Tiberias, Jesus did not lecture Peter. He invited him to breakfast, asked him three times if he loved him, and gave him a job to do: feed my sheep.

Drawing on Hebrews 13 and a story from a recent trip to England, the message here, much like in No Relationship Beyond Repair, is that failure never has the final word. Stay humble, go back to the Lord, and let him restore you.

Key Points:
Jesus’ question in Matthew 16 asks what anything in this life is worth if it costs your soul, the part of you made to last forever.
Every disciple promised to stand with Jesus, and every one of them fled when he was arrested, before the Holy Spirit had been poured out.
Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, the price Exodus 21:32 places on a servant’s life, then tried to fix things with the money instead of going back to Jesus.
Peter saw the transfiguration with his own eyes and still denied Jesus three times, a reminder that great experiences alone do not make us strong.
Jesus met Peter with breakfast, not a lecture, and restored him with three questions that matched his three denials.
Restoration came with a purpose: feed my lambs, feed my sheep.
Failure can make us pull back or turn bitter, but humility takes us back to God, who promises never to leave us or forsake us.
God is at work all over the world, and no past mistake puts anyone beyond his reach.

“What is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Peter and Judas both failed Jesus on the night of his arrest. Judas sold him for 30 pieces of silver and tried to make things right with money. Peter denied him three times and went out and wept bitterly. Only one of them went back to Jesus. This episode follows both men through Matthew and John to see how Jesus restored Peter with breakfast on the beach, three simple questions and a fresh purpose. It is a clear reminder that humility, not hiding, is the way back after failure, and that God has not finished with you yet.

Title: Making a Difference: Compassion, Warning and Those Who Stumble

Summary:

“It’s not gossip if it’s true.”

That excuse gets a hard look in this episode. It asks how to treat someone who has stumbled, whether they are a stranger or sitting in the next seat at church. Starting in the letter of Jude, it explains what making a difference really meant to the King James translators. It was never about changing someone’s life. It meant telling two situations apart, because some people need compassion and others need a clear warning before it is too late.

Two ditches sit either side of the road. One is condemnation, fed by gossip and whispered news, even when every word is accurate. The other is indifference, which means staying quiet to avoid an awkward conversation while someone walks towards the edge. The story of Judah’s captives in 2 Chronicles 28 shows both answers at work. A prophet named Oded warns a victorious army, and four named soldiers clothe, feed and carry the defeated home to Jericho.

It closes with two men called Ananias in the book of Acts. One greets a feared persecutor as Brother Saul. The other hears the plain truth from Peter, who leaves the judgement to God. The aim is always to restore people gently, a thread that also runs through Forgiveness and Restoration.

Key Points:
In Jude 22, making a difference means telling people’s situations apart, not changing their lives. Some need compassion, others need a clear warning.
Gossip is not excused by being true. Proverbs calls spreading what should stay covered talebearing, and Romans 1 lists whisperers among serious wrongs.
Condemnation, whether from others or from ourselves, pushes people into a ditch. The answer is mercy.
Indifference can pass for kindness, but staying silent while someone heads for danger protects us, not them.
In 2 Chronicles 28, Oded warned the army while four soldiers cared for the captives. People do not have to be blameless to deserve compassion.
Jesus named a woman’s many sins and declared them forgiven in the same breath, which is the balance to aim for.
Ananias called Saul brother before he had proved anything. Peter simply stated the truth to the other Ananias and left judgement to God.
Galatians 6:1 sums it up: restore people gently, and keep an eye on yourself while you do.

2 Chronicles 28:8-15
Acts 9:13-15
Acts 9:17
Acts 5:1-5

Related Episodes:
Forgiveness and Restoration: also turns to Galatians 6:1-2 and draws the line between conviction and condemnation when someone needs restoring.
Contending for the Faith: works through the same closing section of Jude and takes aim at the apathy this episode calls indifference.

Title: Certainty in an Uncertain World: What the Bible Says Is Fixed

Summary:

"We might not be in control, but God is."

That line sits at the centre of this episode, which goes looking for certainty in an uncertain world. It opens where Luke opens, writing so that his reader might know the certainty of what he had been taught, and then names the things unsettling people now: conflicts that flare up, pause and flare again, the mortgage, the job, health, and the fridge and the washing machine giving out in the same weekend.

From there it works through what the Bible presents as fixed. God's word comes first, described as established and trustworthy rather than one more opinion among the billion results a search returns. Then comes first-hand experience. A candid account from Melbourne in 1969 describes turning up argumentative and sceptical, treating baptism as an experiment, and speaking in tongues anyway, then asking God for further proof a couple of days later and getting it.

The closing stretch is about hope as an anchor that holds, the assurance that God knows who belongs to him, and the confidence that what has been entrusted to him is safe, ground also covered from another angle in Luke and Theophilus.

Key Points:
Luke wrote his account so his reader could be certain of what he had been taught, not merely informed about it.
The world offers endless competing opinions, while God's word is described as fixed, established and trustworthy, which makes it something to build on.
Study in 2 Timothy is closer to giving your walk with God a red hot go than swotting for an exam.
Repentance, baptism by immersion and receiving the Holy Spirit follow the pattern of the death, burial and resurrection, and there is no substitute pathway.
A first-hand account of 1969 describes a sceptic who treated baptism as an experiment and spoke in tongues on the spot, then asked for further proof and received it.
Hope is described as an anchor for the soul, something that cannot slip or break under whoever steps out on it.
When the Lord returns, problems are not solved one at a time but settled all at once, so present trouble is not evidence that the promise has failed.
The aim is confidence rather than condemnation, since doubts and misgivings are treated as normal and the Bible keeps reassuring rather than accusing.
