US supreme court set to overturn abortion rights

View descriptionShare

In 1973 the US supreme court made a landmark decision to protect the right of women to terminate a pregnancy through the first trimester.

The ruling in Roe v Wade, which was brought about when Norma McCorvey, who was known as Jane Roe in the case, successfully challenged the law in Texas that made it illegal for her to get an abortion.

But this week, a draft ruling leaked to US website Politico revealed Roe v Wade, and the rights of women to make their own decisions about their pregnancies is in the cross hairs, with the supreme court indicating they will overturn the 1973 decision.

Today on Please Explain, world editor Michelle Griffin joins Nathanael Cooper to explain Roe v Wade and what the new supreme court decision means.
