Polls suggest Labor victory within grasp

View descriptionShare

It’s been less than 24 hours since Prime Minister Scott Morrison called the election but already battle lines have been drawn and fierce campaigning is underway.

Both Morrison and his Labor counterpart Anthony Albanese are on the ground today in marginal seats, hoping to convince local voters they should be the one to lead the country for the next three years.

In question are a range of hot-button election issues, including the country’s massive national debt, support for aged care facilities and action on climate change.

However, new polls suggest the incumbent government has a lot of ground to make up if they want to lock in a fourth term, with voters in key Queensland and Western Australian seats deserting the Coalition.

Today on Please Explain, chief political correspondent David Crowe joins Dominic Powell to discuss today’s polling and take us through what are likely to be the major issues for this campaign.
