There are growing calls for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange to be brought home to Australia, despite Prime Minister Anthony Albanese refusing to publicly intervene in the case.

Assange has been held at London’s Belmarsh prison for more than three years, since he was dragged from the Ecuadorian embassy.

UK Home Secretary Priti Patel has approved Assange’s extradition to the US to face espionage charges.  Assange’s legal team is expected to appeal that decision.

Labor MPs have backed “quiet diplomacy” taking place behind the scenes as the best approach.

But the journalists’ union, Assange’s family, friends and legal team, Independent MP Andrew Wilkie, the Greens and former foreign affairs minister Bob Carr have called for more urgent action to return Assange to Australia.
