Friday, April 4: Our first Section IV softball broadcast of the season took us to Lansing, where the Bobcats hosted the Schuyler Storm in both teams’ second game of the year. The Storm jumped out to an early lead, scoring in each of the first four innings. Behind a complete-game shutout from Paige Ells, the Storm earned a 6-0 road win.

Both teams scored in the first, and Newfield took a 3-1 lead with a two-run fourth. But Marathon’s offense exploded in the fifth, highlighted by Blake Birdsall’s bases-clearing, three-RBI triple, lifting the Olympians to a 7-4 win.

The teams traded buckets through the first three quarters, but a late surge from the Lake Hawks gave them a nine-point lead entering the fourth. The Black Knights battled back, forced costly turnovers in the final minute, and took the lead late to secure a 58-56 win, claiming their first sectional title since 1999
