The Local Showcase

The Local Showcase - 18 September, 2025

Petersfield men's rugby team suffered a big loss last weekend and now have the task of having to move on and forget. But they have just a week to do it and on Saturday they take on Havant Dolphins at Penns Place. The women's side also take on the Havant Dolphins but from a much different perspective....riding on cloud nine after a stunning 65-0 victory the previous week. https://www.petersfieldrfc.club/ . This week, Shine Radio made a short visit to the Smartspaces stadium to catch up with the first team manager of Petersfield town football club, Kris Stephens. He gives us his take on the season so far and where the club are heading. We also report on their 2 fixtures this week against AFC Aldermaston and Christchurch https://petersfieldtownfc.co.uk/ . And high-flying Liss Athletic are about to hit an immovable force as they face a juggernaut of a side in the shape of Moneyfields this week. Their second game on Saturday, sees them play a home league tie against Overton. https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/lissathletic/ . And also in football, Liphook United men's side pick up again in league action where they hope to bag the full 3 points against lower league positioned Broughton. https://www.liphookunitedfootballclub.org/. Both the men's and the women's first team hockey sides take to the field again. The men are desperate for points but face giants of the league...unbeaten Trojans on Saturday. The women head to respected Winchester looking to maintain their recent impressive form. https://www.petersfieldhockeyclub.com/

In the Sportlight 1st November

There's an unwritten universal law known in stargazing as 'Spode's Law' which says if something can go wrong it will go wrong!

For stargazers, this usually manifests as cloudy skies whenever there's an astronomical event; but allow Sky Watch to introduce you to one Guillaume Le Gentil, an 18th century French astronomer who was perhaps the unluckiest observer ever!

Discover what you can see in the Petersphere night skies this month with the latest Sky Watch.

Written by Petersphere resident, astronomical expert and amateur astronomer Geoff Burt, and voiced by Claire Vennis, every month Shine Radio presents a Sky Watch of our unique dark skies.

Sky Watch - the night skies above Petersfield in November 2026

Jarvis the working cocker and Bailey the labrador are highly trained Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) dogs.

Along with veteran handler Graham Currie, the dogs are first responders to disaster scenes in the UK such as train crashes or collapsed buildings. Bailey is also an ISAR dog - working internationally as part of a search and rescue cooperation that came into being after the 9/11 attacks.

Their job is to find survivors among the rubble who may be buried or unconscious, so that they can receive medical help as fast as possible. They are part of the Technical Rescue and USAR Station at Essex Fire & Rescue Service.

This interview is packed with practical insight into the dogs' training and the organisational and logistic support of the wider team. Graham describes their experiences together in the kind of life and death situations that few dogs or humans encounter.

Graham also talks compellingly about the team's volunteering as an International Search & Rescue (ISAR) team -  Bailey's most recent deployment was to Venezuela in the wake of its huge earthquake.

Urban search and rescue is a discipline that demands exceptional steadiness, where no two days are the same, and in which their success is the difference between life and death for survivors.

Graham and his dogs travel long distances when required, so must be at ease on boats, planes, being airlifted by a helicopter or swinging from a rope so once they arrive they are ready to work.
