Just up the A3 sits the Hindhead Tunnel — which many of us now drive through without a second thought. But who remembers the days of congestion at the Hindhead traffic lights, the grime coating buildings beside the queues of traffic, and the old A3 winding its way around the Devil’s Punch Bowl?
Fifteen years on, the tunnel continues to provide safer, smoother and more reliable journeys, while the old road has been returned to nature. Jo Gray meets Dominic Holyoak from National Highways, one of the hidden workforce working around the clock to help keep the tunnel operational and motorists safe.
