A Productivity Commission report has shown despite an increase of funding for education, student academic performance has not improved.

Director of Education Studies at the Centre For Independent Studies, Glenn Fahey told Oly Peterson on Perth Live its not new information, its been known for years, but its has been highlighted that increased funding doesn't equal increased performance.

Mr Fahey says teachers are able to recognise that students underperforming but don't always have the tools to help turn it around.

"There's a lot more to be done in preparing teachers... so they understand what practices are most effective, when to intervene, and which steps to take to address these deficits."
