New survey reveals strong parental support for school-provided meals

View descriptionShare

A survey of parents with children aged between 4 and 17 has found they would support the introduction of school-provided meals, with a focus on the dietary benefits.

Deputy Director, Flinders Caring Futures Institute, Professor Rebecca Golley told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that their survey found that 86% of parents were supportive of this movement.

"Some of it comes from personal reasons so that connivence factor, Some for social reasons so the benefit of children being able to share the same meals and lastly, environmental reasons such as trying to look at novel ways to reduce food waste and packaging," she told Oly.

"We asked parents what they would be willing to pay and majority said they would be happy to pay over $5.00 per child, per day. But then other parents say for higher quality, organic meals they'd be willing to pay $13.00 a day."
