Bell report finds Scomo's secret powers 'corrosive of trust in government'

View descriptionShare

A report into Scott Morrison’s secret portfolios found they “fundamentally undermined” trust in government.

The former prime minister became a duplicate health minister at the height of COVID-19 and later took on an extra four portfolios without informing his colleagues.

Former High Court Justice Virginia Bell, who has been looking into the matter since August, has handed down her report today.

She said the move was unnecessary and labelled the appointments as “corrosive of trust in government”.

Michael Pachi, 6PR Federal Political Editor told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that a lot of what was in the report was expected.

"Essentially the recommendations she's made in this inquiry is that there is extra transparency and accountability and that the public is aware of who is in charge of what."

"What I think will be happening next week is that Labor will be working through these six recommendations and probably will legislate that when someone is given a ministerial role that it's made public and that their responsibilities are made public."
