In Jupiter, town officials held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new police headquarters. Construction on the estimated $22-24 million project, which will house the town’s IT data center and includes a nearby veterans memorial, began in March when crews started on early work that included reshuffling parking spaces and enlarging the lake at Jupiter’s municipal complex. Jupiter Police hope to move into the building by next summer. The new building, which will also serve as Jupiter’s emergency operations center, will be vital during hurricanes. If Hurricane Dorian would have made a direct hit to the Jupiter area around Labor Day weekend this year, officials predicted his existing headquarters would not have survived. The new, 38,823-square-foot building will be able to withstand winds up to 119 mph. Town leaders have explored replacing the police headquarters since Hurricane Matthew narrowly missed hitting Palm Beach County in 2016. Jupiter Police has used the building since at least the 1980s. Near-misses by Dorian and 2017′s Hurricane Irma only reinforced that need, Mayor Todd Wodraska said.
