A one-time South Florida organized crime figure is facing new federal charges, this time that he defrauded Medicare of 3.8 million dollars. John Mamone (Mah-MOAN-ee), who lives west of Delray Beach, has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and is free on bail. Prosecutors say Mamone helped run loan-sharking, money-laundering and marijuana-smuggling operations in the 1980s and 1990s before being sent to prison. He then testified against other organized crime figures, receiving a spot in the witness protection program. The new fraud charges involve submitting phony bills for wrist, knee and shoulder braces.
