A DNA match has linked a man in state prison to a 1995 rape near West Palm Beach. Octavio Berr-AIR-a was convicted in 2003 of vehicular homicide in the death of a woman and a Delray Beach firefighter. Now he faces charges of sexual assault in the 1995 case, in which a woman was attacked along Southern Boulevard near Palm Beach International Airport. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office reopened the case in 2018 after DNA evidence was compared to profiles in a national database and identified him as a possible suspect. It’s the latest arrest from a DNA match that the sheriff’s crime lab has helped to make since PBSO launched a $1 million-dollar project to clear a backlog of untested rape evidence kits in 2015.
