Delray Beach Fire Chief Keith Tomey recommended adding another person to the rescue team in Highland Beach, a move that likely won't please Highland Beach leaders. Highland Beach, only a 1.1 square-mile town, pays Delray Beach $5.1 million to staff its fire station with 22.5 employees under a contract that expires in 2026. But in a special meeting Tuesday, the chief said the Highland Beach had “grossly underestimated” the cost of starting its own fire department.
