Coronavirus Florida: In bond hearings, some lawyers ask judges to consider virus

View descriptionShare

The threat of a coronavirus outbreak in jails is leading some attorneys to ask judges to lower their clients’ bail, allowing their release. Several attorneys have filed motions seeking relief with Palm Beach County courts, for reasons as diverse as the prisoner being at high risk of catching the disease to them being needed at home to care for young children. Judges are granting some of the requests but haven’t yet allowed a large release of prisoners from the Palm Beach County Jail. While other jails in the state are crowded, the county is operating at about half its capacity, and Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said it was enough space to keep conditions safe for those in custody, all of whom get a health screening before they’re booked.
