A teacher at Riverbend Academy in Tequesta is set to retire at the end of the month after 42 years in the classroom. Karen Fleming has spent her last 24 years at Riverbend, a school that works with trauma-informed pasts and is affiliated with SandyPines Hospital, which offers psychiatric care for those ages 5 through 17. School administrators saluted Fleming at a meeting this week and said she excelled at striking a balance between her students' skills and their emotional needs. Her principal, Gary Sparks, called her a hero to these children.
