As Australian's drink less alcohol to focus on their health and wellbeing, a new marketing strategy has crept in.
‘Health-washing’ refers to alcohol companies working to try and win back the loyalty of customers by claiming certain alcohol products offer a healthier alternative.
One alcohol company, Hard Fizz, has said its customers don’t want lolly-water like Cruisers: "Vodka is more refined and easier to deliver. It’s also associated with health benefits and consumers know what it is compared to seltzers.”
Adjunct Professor at the National Drug Research Institute, Dr Nicole Lee, tells Mie the bottom line is drinking alcohol isn't healthy.
“We’re seeing alcohol marketed in ways that make it seem like a healthier choice, which is dishonest and misleading.
The reality is, there’s no form of alcohol that’s beneficial for your health, no matter how it’s packaged".
