Australia’s Paris Climate Agreement commitments can be easily met without implementing any emission reduction targets, Scott Morrison has said.

Suggesting he has no intentions of withdrawing Australia from the controversial deal, the new Prime Minister says the non-subsidised renewable technologies already in the system will allow us to satisfy the 26-28% reductions that Paris mandates.

But some are saying this doesn’t add up.

According to ClimateWorks, Australia needs to double its emission-reduction progress to achieve these 26-28% below 2005 levels by 2030 targets.

Former One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts says the new Coalition should walk away from the agreement.

“They’re wanting to put the UN ahead of us.”

“The crazy thing  is these are aspirational goals and other countries aren’t even complying with them. What Morrison is doing is he is going to legislate that we will comply with Paris. It’s no longer voluntary for us, it’ll be compulsory.”

“It’s gutless. We know the majority of Liberals are against it. But only a few brace people like Tony Abbott and Craig Kelly speak up about it.”
