NSW cracks down on 'big four' insurers for $140M hospital bill shortfall

View descriptionShare

Clinton speaks with NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey, who is set to introduce legislation forcing the big four private health insurers - HCF, NIB, Bupa, and Medibank - to fully pay their hospital bills.

Since 2019, their refusal to pay the correct rate for single rooms in public hospitals has cost NSW Health $700 million.

Last year, the insurers paid significantly less than the gazetted rate of $892, leading to a yearly shortfall of $140 million.

The new laws will restore lapsed 2013 legislation that previously ensured full payments from insurers.
