Labor unlikely to deliver on its promise to halve immigration

View descriptionShare

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's pledge to halve immigration this financial year is under scrutiny, potentially leading to accusations of breaking an election promise.

He had committed to reducing the net overseas intake to 250,000 in 2024-25. However, with 547,300 foreigners moving to Australia in 2023 and 482,450 migrants arriving in the year to May, achieving this target seems unlikely.

Mike is joined by Saxon Davidson from the Institute of Public Affairs, who highlights that recent data suggests Labor may struggle to fulfill its promise.

"The latest ABS data confirms the federal government is simply not interested in
delivering on its promise to reduce Australia's record migration surge, and will
dramatically overshoot its net overseas migration commitment", he says.
