Can a celebrity get a fair trial?

View descriptionShare

When Nick Kyrgios faces the Magistrates Court in Canberra today over the alleged assault of his ex-girlfriend, does he arrive pre-judged by the community?

At the core of our judicial process is the presumption of innocence. Before anything has even been tested in court, defendants are often already judged guilty by ‘courts of public opinion’.

For cases that go to a jury trial, jurors are instructed to make their decision only on the evidence put before them in the court.

Luke is joined by Adrian McKenna, Criminal Defence Lawyer, Hugo Law Group, for his view on whether a celebrity can ever get a fair trial?

Given that their every move and peccadillo is blasted across social and online media, is the presumption of innocence meaningless for them?
