The South American nation of Venezuela is currently in the news and for all the wrong reasons.  Put simply, the President Nicolás Maduro was under siege.  Military officers are defecting, the economy is in free fall, people are queueing for food, inflation is out of control & mass protests are suffocating the capital city of Caracus.  Now Australia, the United States and a bunch of European powers are recognising the leader of the opposition as the legitimate president, but Russia & China continue to back Maduro. It’s chaos, and the threat is spinning out of control, but how did it come to this?
