Another week, another accusation of bullying - the ‘B’ word is increasingly being thrown around in workplaces and parliament. 

Bill Woods speaks with Psychologist Kim Cullen, who has undertaken a number of investigations into workplace bullying, to find out what constitutes as bullying.  

WorkSafe defines it as repeated unreasonable behaviour, directed at a person or group of people.  Typically aimed to belittle, humiliate, degrade and/or sabotage, victims can suffer emotional, physical, and psychological harm. 

But it’s important to note that bullying is defined by the behaviour itself, not someone’s response to it.  In other words, someone feeling bullied, doesn’t mean they actually are. 

Conversely, someone feeling ok with bullying behaviour doesn’t mean the behaviour isn’t bullying. 

Either way, if you think you’re experiencing bullying, seek consultation first - speak with HR or WorkSafe and ask, “am I being bullied?”
