Aged care closures are distressing elderly Australians

View descriptionShare

Since September of last year, the aged-care sector in Australia has grappled with Labor's stringent reforms, resulting in the closure of at least 23 aged-care homes.

These reforms, which include mandatory 24/7 registered nurses and minimum care requirements, have significantly impacted the sector.  According to data provided by the Department of Health and Aged Care, 17 residential services shut down between September 1 and February 28.

Luke is joined by Craig Gear, chief executive of OPAN (Older Persons Advocacy Network), who raises concerns over the closures, emphasizing the distress experienced by elderly Australians and their families.

He calls on the federal government to provide support during the transition to new homes and stressed the importance of early engagement with residents and effective communication and oversight by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.
