Record Collections and Recollections with Matt Do & Nick Hibbs

Out of the Box

PAULO FLORES (LUNY)

Joining us today is London-based alternative pop artist Mr Beale! On her newest track, Skin, Beale anthropomorphises herself into Ordovician prey. Cold and doomed, you swim toward warmer waters. Harnessing themes of evolution and body horror, she drowns you in her underwater world. She’s also a multimedia artist and vocalist in British Jazz band, Palafico Honey. Joining us all the way from the UK, she’s here today to chat new music, growing up, and navigating queerness.

This episode was presented to you by Nick Hibbs and produced by Kass Vincent and Alex Kennedy. Out of the Box is recorded at the fbi station in Redfern, which is on unceded Gadigal Land. We pay our respects to Gadigal elders past and present and recognise the ongoing colonial violence committed across this country. Wherever you’re tuning in from in so-called Sydney, the land always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.

MR. BEALE

In times like these, we need coalescence. Now Always Fades’ newest album, Coalesce, is a euphoric odyssey in reuniting old sounds with new. Featuring blockbuster features from Locust’s Olive Kimoto, Alias Error, and Lili Hall, Xavier Bacash scribes a sonic love letter to trip hop. No stranger to fbi radio, he was our Independent Artist of the Week last year with his release, Into the Doldrums. He joins us on the show today to chat all things production, collaboration and fatherhood!

NOW ALWAYS FADES

On the show today, we have one of my absolute favourite artists from Sydney. For 10 years, Grace Stevenson has been making music under the name Rebel Yell fusing dark industrial techno with her pop and melodic sensibilities. There aren’t many artists who seem to find the perfect middle ground between the two contrasting styles of music as seamlessly as Rebel Yell. Just last week, she released the EP Miss Worldwide. It’s funny, it's anthemic, it’s heavy, it’s just another gem in her incredible catalogue. I’m excited to chat about this, the upcoming shows, and so much more.
