On this episode of Our American Stories, John Ford was at the top of Hollywood. The director of Stagecoach, The Grapes of Wrath, and How Green Was My Valley had money, fame, power, and back-to-back Academy Awards for Best Director. Then, at forty-seven, he walked away from Hollywood and went on active duty with the U.S. Navy.

For our Hollywood Goes to War series, historian and Wild West expert Roger McGrath shares why Ford decided to take his cameras into the thick of World War II, filming under fire at Midway, parachuting behind enemy lines in Burma, and going ashore with American troops at Normandy.

Our American Stories tells stories that aren’t being told. Positive stories about generosity and courage, resilience and redemption, faith and love. Stories about the past and present. And stories about ordinary Americans who do extraordinary things each and every day. Stories from our listeners about their lives. And their history. In that pursuit, we hope we’ll be a place where listeners can refresh their spirit, and be inspired by our stories.
