This is One Bill's Live, presented by Calllida Health.
All right, we made it to Friday.
Chris Brown, Steve Tasker here with you One Bill's Live as your show of choice.
Thanks for making it your selection today.
As you know, we're making our way through the free agency period, inching closer to the draft. Han't yet flipped the calendar to April, when really the rubber kind of meets the road in terms of the draft closing in. Yeah, and we are dealing with this side distraction known as March madness. I was up late watching games. Uh didn't make it to the end of the last game. I got to about ten minutes left, and I'm like, I have a I have a pretty good inkling which way this one's going.
I am. I'm not sacrificing anywhere sleep.
I gotta be honest with you. I didn't watch a single minute watch a minute now. No. I was doing fun stuff with the grandsons and they were, oh man, they beat the crud out of Grumpa last night.
Oh my gosh.
So you're just doing wrestling matches on the carpet bit that kind of thing. Anyway, So we had that going on, and uh.
Yeah, that's like battling a bunch of jiu jitsu fight.
Yes, yes, like Rese's monkeys and.
You're fighting the ninja turtles.
So I didn't and I told you I was laughing. I didn't sleep that good last night. I've got one of these rings. This is present, right, So we got one of these rings. And people got to notice I.
Wear biometric device.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's one of those and it tells you how and it tells you We talked about it once when I when I got it, and now I'm struggling to get a connected my phone all the time. But I last night technology dad dumb it. Uh So last night was it was a pretty good night of sleep.
But I don't know.
Yeah, about five minutes before we came in here, Steve was a little grumpy because he dropped some things on the floor and he's getting all ornery. And Steve is not usually an easily agitated, right, and he's a person that usually has a good deal of patience with people and with things that happened.
So I got two computers. Everybody watched the show. I got the I got the surface, the laptop, the whole thing, and I got a mouse for each of them. And of course, if you ever drop anything, it's got to go to the furthest point away from where you can actually reach the stupid thing. Whether it's an oreo cookie in the dining room table or your mouse and your desk, it's gonna whatever's gonna happen, is gonna bounce in such a way as you can't get it. I was a victim today.
Went way under your desk, right, you had to go on all fours again. It so that that tipped the scales for Steve. That was a fine witchtraw, to which he replied and laid out his day. You know, first I slept too long, then I ate too much at lunch, and now this.
And I said those first two were problems for a lot of people.
That's a pretty good day. Much too long, too much sleep, too much good food. I'll admit my life has reached a certain way where the bar is pretty high. I was like, hold on a second. When I'm complaining about too much sleep and too much good food food, I have reached the pinnacle of Western civilization right there. That was good and I had I had plenty in my mind. I had plenty of room to complain too.
By the way, there were some good games on yesterday, a couple offsets. Drake got the upset, and there was one other upset. It was mcnee's state. Every year, I think in the last twelve years, a twelve seed is upset. A five seed is at least one twelve that upsets a five every single year. And it happened again.
And that's I mean most of us. You got a team, he kind of pulled forward one of those teams, right, You got a team you're you know, for me, it's Ku University of Cans where I grew up and my wife's and my wife's in a lump, right, So you got that team. But the rest of it, all this the other thirty two games, I just want to see somebody get knocked off.
Yeah, you want an upset, let's go. I want to I want to know what you can hear it with the crowd that's in attendance. Ye're all pulling forward too today.
You showed it to me seventeen years ago. Hey, Steph Curry bursts onto the scene, drops forty on Gonzaga. Boom, They're in the second round. That's that's all. That's all I want to see. That's all I want to see. I don't care about first round draft picks and this guy's got that, who cares. I want to see the big guy get crushed and hope some dreams I want from David.
That's right all I am in.
I want the Dukes North Carolina, even Kansas, Kansas, Dukes North Carolina's all. I want all those teams to get absolutely detonated.
Kansas lost to ar Kansas last night.
So we Arkansas, though, they've got they've got some history.
Yeah, they're a decent team. Yeah, let's get to some Bills notes.
NFL Networks Tom Pelisero is reporting that Jets free agent defensive tackle a LeKi Fotwo is scheduled to make a free agent visit with the Bills.
He has also visited with the Las Vegas Raiders.
He's a former fourth round pick of the Arizona Cardinals out of Utah about four or five years ago. Only appeared in two games for the Jets last season. But you know, a big defensive tackle kind of long. A lot of those, you know, players of Pacific Islander descent are usually thick bodies, and he's got a little length to them, which I kind of like, so I'm cures to see if that, you know, gains any traction. Yeah, or the Bills are about nine and change under the cap, so you know, you're probably looking at like a one year deal kind of thing at this point.
Yeah, the guys are signing one year deals now.
And he is an exact like he is the prototypical guy the Bills should be looking for right now, a guy with some experience, not thirty six years old, some size, and some traits.
It's exactly who they should be looking for.
Yeah, he didn't get on the field a lot for the Jets last year because they got a pretty good crew at defensive lineman there, so very often he was healthy and active because one of the few positions that stayed relatively healthy for the Jets last year was their defensive interior. So he didn't get on the field much. Like I said, only played in two games last year for the Jets, But prior to that he was a regular rotational player for Arizona, and then he was in one other place, I believe, the year before he joined the Jets.
So we'll see where it goes.
But according to reports, schedule to make a visit the other Bill's note is a birthday wish for one Sean McDermott, head coach. Sean McDermott turns fifty one today, So happy birthday to him. Hopefully he's enjoying the day here at work and then maybe watch a little March Madness with the family.
Yeah, that's a It's good for him that it's in the off season. Gets a chance to take a breath. Yeah right, because man, oh man, they don't. Those guys don't even take their noses off the grindstone for six months.
Especially him, Yeah, knowing who he is.
Yeah, let's go around the NFL, which is presented by Collida Healthy, official healthcare system of the Buffalo Bills. And the Pittsburgh Post Gazette was the first to report this, but there are now several reports that Aaron Rodgers is currently at the Pittsburgh Steelers facility right now. Other reporters have followed up and confirmed that no deal with the Steelers is said to be done or imminent, But this could get the ball rolling in that department, as we know. The other day, Minnesota pretty much laid it out there that they're moving forward with JJ McCarthy and if they do sign a veteran quarterback.
It'll be strictly as a backup.
It's presumed that Rogers wants more than that if he continues his career and the Steelers have an opening, so we'll see where that goes. The Giants were the other team said to be in pursuit of Rogers' services. Steve and I were discussing it on the show the other day. The place he should go is Pittsburgh. He got DK Metcalf, Pickens and Friar move to throw to. They do have to fix some things on their offensive line. They lost their left tackle, their starting left guard to free agency, so they got some holes to fill.
They can get that in the draft, though, I mean they'll get a top twenty player.
And yeah, I'm.
If Rogers wants to win. Pittsburgh set up for it way more than the Giants are at this point. It's got an established culture and head coach.
I just.
Yeah, I think Pittsburgh's the spot if you're one of the quarterbacks that are available. I mean, that's where you'd love to land. I think, in my opinion, you're going to get supported. Not that, not that Brian Dabole and Joe Shane and those guys over there in New York are going to do their best for whoever's there.
But they got a further They got a longer way to go, got a longer way to go.
I would agree with that.
I'll say this though, it's if you want to go someplace.
I given what we think we know about Aaron Rodgers, a strong head coach, seems a little bit out of his comfort zone.
Well, beggars can't be choosers. He's looking for work, so that's right, take it or leave, that's true. I think he's got a measure of respect for Mike Tomlin. I would like to think he's been in the league long enough to know. But that guy's accomplished as a head coach, so I would anticipate there's a measure of mutual respect there.
So hopefully that's the case. We'll see if it happens.
Yeah.
The Miami Dolphins have been busy signing free agents to one year deals over the course of this week. The most recent addition free agent linebacker Willie Gay. Some Bills fans might remember his days with the Chiefs, but he has since played for two other teams, most recently playing last season for the New Orleans Saints, so he is going to be on the Dolphins roster. I did notice Miami also. You remember late last year, after Tyrell Dotson was cut loose by Seattle, Miami signed him. He was going to be a free agent, but then they re signed him to a two year deal. So we'll see Tyrel Dodson down in Miami this coming.
Season as well.
Cleveland Browns added to their offensive line. They signed Chicago free agent guard Tevin Jenkins. I think overall, Jenkins, who was like a second round pick, maybe even a first round pick if I remember right, was was largely seen as a disappointment in Chicago.
As are a lot of players. But yeah, yeah, I think of I view everybody coming out of Chicago as.
Second round pick.
I almost I almost consider him damaged goods. They all never had a culture that would.
Build on itself year to year to year.
And it's just much like the Jets.
They lack player development and the major major problem for them. I think they're hoping with Ben Johnson and his staff that that starts to change.
It just seems like that building is like a bad water supply.
There's lead in the water.
Yeah, something something, It's just nobody ever seems right when they're there, you know. I mean you look at our our guy, uh Terrell Edmunds, Tremaine Edmonds, who went there and just just disappeared. I mean we didn't we let him go and we were going to pay him fifteen million a year like the Bears are. He's a physical guy, just just disappear when they get there. Yeah, And that's just me and my perception from a thousand miles away. But just seems like it's just a bad water supply that nobody's their best when they go there.
Yeah.
I those are hard things to turn around, and you got to get a strong minded coach in there to kind.
Of hit the reboot.
Yeah, and it may start higher than that. It may start with the ownership and stuff and what they're willing to do and how they support them, what they feel like and what the relationship is and all of the stuff that goes into all the things that the count for winning.
Some of that may be in there, but yeah, you'd like to see him with a.
With a coach that has some sway in the organization and has a plan and then have somebody, you know, give him what he needs, what he says he needs. It doesn't always happen apparently, or they have consistently hired the wrong guy.
Yeah, I think they're really over the moon that they landed Ben Johnson. I think some people were surprised they were able to land him because they had a similar problem to what you saw the Bills experience during the drought.
It was hard to get a top tier head coach.
It was difficult for them to recruit one. And I think they're hoping Ben Johnson, who I think was widely considered the cream of the crop in terms of coaches that were available, to ascend into a head coaching role. I think they're hoping that he can kind of turn their fortunes around because.
He is that good.
We'll see. We know he's an expert play caller.
We talk about it every round of coaching hires. I think would surprise some people to find out how many guys say no or say I'm not your guy, you know. I think it happens a little bit more than we're aware of.
The Detroit Lions added to their secondary They signed San Francisco free agent corner Rock you seen and then just crossing a few moments ago, they also added Philly free agent defensive back Avonte Maddox, so Lions adding to their secondary twofold here in the last couple of days. As we know, that was a defense that at times would give up some points. So trying to shore up the back end are the Lions. And the Kansas City Chiefs have re signed another one of their own. Pass rusher Charles Amenehu agrees to a one year deal to come back. He played last year after coming back from a torn ACL that he suffered in twenty twenty three, showed enough promise clearly for them to resign him again, and a lot of times those players are better two years removed from an ACL injury rather than their.
First year back.
Last thing for around the NFL interesting statistic from the twenty twenty four season steve four hundred ninety fewer plays from scrimmage league wide this past season in comparison to twenty twenty three. One of the main reasons there were almost thirty nine hundred more rushing yards league wide last season than in twenty twenty three. And as we all know, run plays also run the clock, which then leads to fewer plays run because the clock is running. Forgive me for all the use of the word run there in that sentence. So there's some league wide speculation as to whether the league will do anything to address the downturn in plays per game. I don't anticipate it. I think they'll talk about it, the Competition Committee will discuss it, but it's one year. I think it's got to become a trend before they say, Okay, we've got a number of plays issue in the league, and we know less plays means less chances to score points, and we don't want points scoring to go down because that's what's in entertaining in our sport.
I think it's got to be a trend before they address it well.
I think, and even in and of itself, I don't think that's the reason they would do anything to affect it. I think what they really want is there are other statistics and numbers they would look at that were more important than just your plays from scrimmage, like one score games, like how close are these games? How competitive are they, how tight are they? How many games are in doubt in the last two minutes. That's more of a telling sign. So I don't think the league cares if it's thirty eight thirty five in the last two minutes or whether it's eight to six in the last two minutes. They just want those games to be we got a shot here. That's more of what they want, more so than just a stark number of Well, I saw, you know, one hundred and fifty plays this week. I only saw one hundred and thirty five last week. That blah blah blah. I think it's more about the drama involved that if there is a quantifiable stat for that, and I think it probably would be tight games.
Yeah, I agree with you for the most part. I do think that.
If it does impact scoring to a noticeable degree, I think discussion about it will gain more tracks.
Well, think about it.
Everybody likes points.
The Bills scored a ton of points this year, and they.
Were six hundred and twelve by the end of the playoffs.
They were fifty to fifty run pass for a good chunk of the sighting, so they weren't the problem. They yeah, so it can be done. But I yeah, Like I said, it's an interesting stat that there are fewer plays, a ton more rushing yards, you know, the pendulum swinging back to the more physical type of running game. You know, it'll take it. It'll take time for that to play out, though, I think. But like like I said, I think they are more telling statistics and numbers and way of evaluating the game. Then I don't think they'll react to that at all.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Diana Rossini from The Athletic has updated her report on Rogers visiting the Steelers. According to one source quote, it's possible an agreement is reached today with Aaron Rodgers, so he is visiting. That much has been confirmed. Could a deal get done by the end of business today? That is at least considered a possibility right now, So this looks like it could happen pretty quickly, even though some initial reports said nothing was imminent.
Yeah, I think it's largely speculation.
But I think if he's in there, of course there's a deal possible.
Because people are trying to connect the dots.
But how fast it happens nobody? How do you know that?
Yeah?
I see, Yes, it's obviously possible, but you know, yeah, come on, he may. I mean, I would not be surprised if they do to get a deal done today.
Yep.
I wouldn't be surprised that if he's in the building, it is on the table today, as it is with every other player. So we'll see.
Some pro days going on today.
Maybe the most noteworthy is University of Michigan's pro day and a guy that has been mocked to the Bills a good deal. Kenneth Grant, one of the participants up there, the defensive tackle six' three and a, quarter weighed in at three point thirty this, morning ran a five one three forty, vertical leaped thirty one, inches had an eight foot nine inch broad, jump and twenty seven reps on the, bench which was a five rep inquise from what he benched at The. Combine so that's the workout for a guy who was widely expected to be a first round. Pick whether he's there for The bills at THIRTY i think is rather likely.
Based on the mock draft as we do it this time of, year and always we try and Have Greg cosell on he's coming on To i'm GONNA i, mean that's the thing With Kenneth. Grant if he's, there, yes he's gonna be A. BILL i don't think he's gonna be there at. Thirty, YEAH i don't think he's gonna be.
There i'd be rather.
Surprised now if, yeah just to give you the guy we were just talking, About Lacky, lotu who is in. Town he's six' five three, thirty himself and he's got four years.
Of, experience yes but that's an example Of What brandon.
Bean does he tries to fill the positional holes right in free agency to. Some degree so if, you're, like hey we'd really love To Have kenneth grant and then all of a sudden he's off, the board you're not out. To lunch you at least have a, fallback option which is, like, like yeah so if assuming they, sign it, and Yeah if potwo's in town and they and they do, Sign him i'll, SAY this.
I think fotwo would land really soft right Here. IN buffalo i think he would like. IT here i think the culture here gives.
Them something.
You're gonna get the best football of the guy's career as part of the part of the gig Here.
IN buffalo i but Guys Like kenneth grant because they just you can't.
Get, him, well now when you're drafting at the bottom of, the round every can't.
GET him, I mean, i'll Yeah the bills are going to get a really. Good player if they pick, at thirty and you know my feelings on whether they will, or not they're gonna get a really.
GOOD player.
I don't necessarily think it's gonna be a defensive tackle or a, defensive end but it. Could be it is gonna be a, defensive tackle a, defensive end, a corner or, a safety one. Of those one of those spots is going to have a high level athlete with some measurables and some production behind Him available When the bills do pick in the first and they may jump up a couple of spots to, GET him i don't think they'll drop very far to, get ONE but i they are gonna be able to get a guy. Like that, So, question kim you Got to, so now If You're, brandon beanie we've been talking, about it if you're going to fill up your, positional emergencies, which, safety corner, defensive, tackle defense, all, that well you still got to pick.
THOSE guys i mean, just.
Well and largely because the veterans you may sign at, that position at least at this point, in time are largely going to be signed to one year. Deals anyway so even if you're in a position to draft a high profile player at a position, of need and your fallback option is a veteran on a one. Year deal you still got to figure out twenty, twenty six, twenty seven. Twenty eight if you draft a guy in that spot and he turns out to be a pretty darn, good player problem solved for the.
Long RUN and i get. It too it sounds like it makes. It tougher, Whereas well now if you just if you, just draft if you went out and signed all corners and all safeties in, free agency it makes it easier for you because now all you got to do is draft defensive ends and different. Defensive, tackles, well yeah you're backed. Into it you paint yourself into a corner that there may be no way out of when you get down there and all those guys, are gone or you're you're drafting guys you don't think can play just out of because you, need them that's. The issue so you're they're trying to fill it all up, with, safeties corners, d linemen ends, and tackles and then go. From there guys Like Lake lecky fotu who recently Of. THE jets.
I mean he may he's not gonna. COME in i would be.
Hard pressed you'd be hard pressed to say he's gonna come in, and transform, you know. The room but the guy, is big and he's he's a. Veteran player it'd be nice to if if he did come in and play his best Football, in buffalo that. Is something, but, still nevertheless, right now just you got to have the body at least for the first six weeks of the.
Season out.
There is another Update, From pittsburgh This From jerry dulac And The Pittsburgh, post cosette who was the first to Report that rogers.
Was visiting his report is conflicting That Of.
Diana rossini he's saying sources of caution to Commitment from rogers may not, come today if, at all and he is just visiting with Team Owner, art rooney the second Head Coach, mike tomlin and General Manager. Omar katt so take it for what. IT'S worth, i know don't tell me about. The labor just show me, The, baby right is that what you're.
Gonna, say yeah don't tell me about, the pain just show me. The baby that's a good husband thing.
To say but we'll see where.
It goes we'll just wait and when they say, he's visiting, he's leaving he's going to look at. Other, places fine or, he visited he, likes it. He's signing we'll pass it along.
To you given what, we know what we've Seen From. Aaron rodgers so the last two Years In, new york it, takes forever bet many twists.
And turns, oh gosh.
It, is friday and that MEANS The obl friday fan mailbag is open for you to submit, your questions whether you do it by phone at eight o three oh five fifty one eighty eight five, fifty two, five fifty or on the Tweetsheet At One. Bill's live any pressing question you have On, the bills, free agency, the draft whatever, it is fire our way at Us and Steve and i'll do our best to give you an informative and. Insightful answer open line through you right now eight oh three oh five fifty one eighty eight five fifty two. Five fifty but let's go to, the phones and we lead Off with Bob. In rochester what do you got? For, us bob You're On One.
Bill's, Live, YES chris i have a free agent in mind For, the bills a. Defensive Tackle. Okayla, campbell yeah he's. Relatively cheap he's. Very productive he's the only knock on him is. His age but he's not playing like. His age, he times he can, be daminant and he's got, great size six foot eight over three hundred and, Ten POUNDS and I think i think the bus should give him. A look what's?
Your, OPINION yeah i don't hate.
That idea he is a physical and longevity anomaly in. This league, he's thirty he's gonna turn. THIRTY nine i think he's gonna turn thirty nine.
This year i'll look it up just to. Double check.
He is he's hard. To describe he's a giant of a man and has played at a high level for as long as any player in.
The league, you know like.
He's like He's A bruce.
Smith type he really going to turn Thirty nine, September first.
He's like He's A bruce.
Smith type played a, long time took care, of himself played at a, high level was supremely gifted with size, and athleticism won a world Championship, with seattle and has, you know has been a little bit of a mercenary here in the last half.
Dozen years, but, man. Oh man.
He's a tremendous locker, room guy which is also one of the reasons he has hung around for. So long.
He's an asset to any team that.
Gets him played all seventeen games last Years or miami at age thirty eight and had Five.
Se in, my opinion he is as sure fire a Rubber stamp HALL of i don't even know his. Career numbers may he may not, be able but the Guy's a Hall. Of famer and one of THE reasons i say that is because of. His longevity, for players longevity, is extremely extremely important when, assessing Greatness And kalais campbell, is played you could do.
A lot worse. THAN ever i don't hate.
The IDEA oh i.
DON'T either i think he would, be Great and i'll, say this he would Thrive in buffalo because of the rotation system. They use he wouldn't, You know he's not going to go in there for, you know fifty snaps, a game so. He, would yes he would be a great asset for, this room no question.
About it that's, Good.
Call bob let's Go to Kevin in rochester here before, the break what do you got? For?
Us?
Kevin?
Yes good After it, Johnny say i'm so thankful that the front office has built a Consistently super bowl contending team and keeping it and it's keeping it. That way i'm glad they're resisting the temptation to go grab one more great star, and, say oh that gets us over.
The top.
FOR sure i just love the way they're building this team and keeping. It Competitive. Number two that, BEING said i think there's a gigantic hole at Cornerback and i'm afraid going into the draft or they're kind, of stuck they're going to have to count on somebody to come in and be. A starter and we saw how that Went. With, kyrieeld.
Yeah.
It is it is not that different a scenario and What the bills were entering in twenty. Twenty two they did not get a veteran in free agency that could be a surefire starter for them three. Years ago and then they went into the draft and everybody under the sun knew they needed A corner and then there was a run on corners right Before the, bills picked and they traded up one spot to make sure they got the last of what they felt was the best of the bunch in. Round one That Was kyrie ELAM who i think from a physical skill, set standpoint had all of the traits you would look for in a first, round pick but obviously it did not pan out for, him here and fortunately enough For, the bills they took another swing at corner in round six And drafted benford and he ends up being the starting.
CALIBER corner.
I will say it is a good, cornerback class and we'll get to that class in depth in the weeks to. Come here as a matter, of fact second hour of, the show We have Greg co cell today and we're going to be going over defensive tackles, with him but corner is on, the list and we'll do that in one of.
These successive Weeks with greg.
Coming up and do they Get to april without signing another veteran cornerback in. FREE agency i think, it's POSSIBLE and i understand the trepidation you might have based on how it went the, last TIME but i think the corner class is good enough and with some of the other positions. Super strong, we know and we said this on the show Yesterday with maddie when we were Doing mock draftwatch.
The big bodies.
Go early so there's a pretty good chance If the bills are somewhere in the neighborhood of thirty or maybe a couple of, picks higher one or two, picks lower that a lot of the good value at defensive tackle and probably edge rusher is going to be off the. Board already there might be some pretty compelling value, at corner maybe, even safety which Is something steve, has suggested and that might be good value there before the run.
Even starts who knows?
Right anytime don't be Gunshy because al went in twenty, twenty TEN and i agree.
WITH you i would agree. With you they're resisting that temptation to take, one big fat swing because what happens after the swing is you always have a dip and there's no guarantees that you're even gonna if you take, that swing you're gonna be any better or probably maybe even worse than you were a year ago when you were. CONSISTENTLY competitive i would agree. With you They're doing they're doing what they do every, single year and this team stays at the top because of what they have done in, the past and you got to keep up with. THAT mentality i know it's it's frustrating for fans to, Hear it but you got to you gotta do what you do. Every year just do it a, little better, you know find one ext, you know find just one more contributor in your, draft class, find one you KNOW what, I mean find a, little better a little better in, free agency a little better, at signings and and that's all it's. Gonna take because, they were, you know, once again they were something out of their control away from winning another playoff game and get into A.
Super bowl so.
That's where they're gonna. Be again that's where the. Expectations are they're gonna be again. This year they're gonna do it with a bunch of different guys than they had, last year just like they did last year from the year before and the year. Before That so.
I'm, With. YOU KEVIN i i like the way they. Build it they do it.
Every year they have a little bit different recipe every year on both sides of, the ball and they have proven to be. Consistent competitors that's where you got. To stay and at this time, of, YEAR listen i don't know who the cornerbacks are that, are AVAILABLE but i Know the. Bills do they're gonna. Get somebody they're gonna get somebody and they're gonna like the guys, So Well i'll i'm. WITH you i have total faith In, What brandon bean and staff.
Are doing got to take a, break here but more of your phone calls when we. Come back we'll lead Off with Dave, and buffalo but open lines for you at eight h three oh five fifty won eighty eight five fifty two five fifty ON This obl friday Fan, mail bag any questioned off.
At us more of your phone. Calls next.
All right back here on One Of Bill's Live, Chris Brown steve tasker. WITH You obl Friday fan mailbag is open for any and all of your questions ON the nfl, at large, the bills, the draft, free agency you. Name it and let's go back to. The phones leading us off in, This segment Dave, in buffalo what do you?
Got, Firs, dave hi thanks for taking, my CALL and i have A mailback friday question. For you i'm very interested to see THE growing nfl commitment to, flag football very interested to see in The next olympics we're going to see a flag. Football competition and one of the rules IN the nfl is that everybody is hurt by the end of the season or three quarters the way through. The SEASON and i wonder what do you think flag football holds for in TERMS of. NFL competition, i mean it's going to be really tough to not see the brutality of. The game but in the, LONG run i think that the answer TO most nfl questions us money and be able to extend a player's career by a couple of years or so because of brutality, is gone or extend the amount of promoting the product THAT the nfl does by keeping the. STARS around i think flag football might actually be something that there's something to say FOR.
The, Nfl, well dave if you want to talk about it as an ancillary league in the in, THE future i could see something like that, taking place and then that league propping itself up with recognizable names of skill position players whose careers in THE regular nfl are over and go play seven on, seven football and, you know lend your name to promote. THE league i could see something like that down. THE line i think you may even see with the growth of, women's sports you might see a women's flag football league at some point. IN time i don't know if it's gonna manifest itself in the next couple, of years but decade down, THE road i could see it because now what you have because flag football is exploding at the, youth level and so to get it to manifest itself at the, PRO level i think that growth has to happen at the youth. Levels first and then when you have a population that can offer you a big enough talent pool in the sport, to play, you know at an organized professional level that can also be a money, making venture well then you might.
Have something, right now what we're seeing is that the explosion of it at the.
Youth level as a matter, of fact more and more, high schools Even In New york state are starting flag, football programs more so for girls because boys in high school the vast majority of them still want to play. Regular FOOTBALL but i think it will be a burgeoning female sport at the high school level because we even, SAW it, i mean our youth football initiatives here is support, you know flag football at, all levels but chiefly girls flag football at the high. School level they're trying to help the league's efforts to push.
That forward.
And the league obviously has interest because if more people are playing some version of, the game more people are going to watch. Their, Game right you've got half the population right that doesn't play.
Professional football or, tackle football but.
PRETTY close i mean that half of, the Population and i'm talking, FEMALES here a good number of them LIKE watching. Nfl football and then if you have young women playing a version of the, GAME flag i think even more of them are going to be interested in FOLLOWING the. Nfl game and they know THAT means, ad dollars, revenue dollars all.
That STUFF and i see the connection between having current pro players or former pro players or almost pro players coming into the flag. Football, ARENA yeah i mean it. Might happen although, you know if you get a Guy Like antonio brown, for Instance Or terrell owens or somebody, like that they'll.
Do it but they ain't gonna do it.
For free, well, NO no i don't think that. Would be they're not going to do it just because. It's, fun now they might do it For an. Olympic medal.
But other, than that, you know that's you're at and that'll be current players might do it For an.
Olympic medal and that's twenty eight that we're, talking, ABOUT right la twenty eight where they are going to have, FLAG football, i believe both men and women's and we're talking still three years down, the road just to get that to raise the profile. And EXPOSURE so i think, a league a, professional league is a. Ways OFF and i couldn't Tell if dave was insinuating that the brutality of regular football was going to to flag football replacing. REGULAR football i don't see that coming because The players union would be vehemently against it because you would instantaneously put every offensive and defensive lineman out. Of work because essentially flag football is seven on. Seven football it's seven on seven and IT is i get, the similarities, you know and all that it is a completely. Different, sport yeah completely different sport with completely different rules and virtually. NO contact i mean you say no contact all of, a sudden you got guys wearing these. Soft helmets you, Know So and i'll, say this.
If you start getting getting grown men playing anything, for keeps it's going to get more and more physical flag football.
Or, not yeah. Fair enough let's Go to Bill and. Ken morenex what do you got?
For?
Us bill how?
You?
Doing guys everybody keeps talking about we need to receive it as a burner and the guy that can catch the ball and really be a guy takes the top off. The defense but the guy is sitting on your roster His Name. James cook why don't you take the receiver and, you know maybe put him out there for like fifty. Sixty times but then when you go into, training Camp if samuel is sitting there studies, an injury you could get rid of him and take that money basically and pay Half, of cook and then you could have the running backs that. You've got now, you know You got davis and You. Get jase you give them some, more carries and you got a receiver that is familiar with. THE office, i mean obviously he's gonna have to go out and maybe pick up something in some of the, pass plays but he knows a lot of that. Stuff. Already yep but this this kind of gets away from the THING that. I mean, i mean you know That mister bean and McDermott and cool don't like the fifteen million, Dollar number but then you look at the receivers. Out there they're getting twenty five to thirty and you're getting your running back and up receiver. For FIFTEEN so I don't i think they had to kind of change their angles looking at him more of a combination guy and not just a.
Running, Back yeah i'll.
Say, that okay, It's, great bill except for. One thing he's going to go from two hundred and two touches this year to four hundred and fifty and he won't.
Make it.
I'm exaggerate he won't get four hundred, fifty touches but he'll go from two hundred and two carries to two hundred and. Seventy carries and.
To justify, THE money, i, mean.
Yeah and sixty.
Five targets if you're gonna leave him on the field for all of those downs he's. Gonna get he's he's gonna let me the wear and tear's. Gonna be it's, a risk and he may he may think he's worth.
The risk.
That's the only downside, to it other, than that, you're right good players make. You better if the more he's on, the field the better he.
Can, play obviously let me propose this, To, you steve not a four hundred. Touch season but let's go back to LET'S see i.
Got it let's go back to What bothered bills fans at the end Of The KANSAS City afc, title game last drive of, the game they're an all out pass mode because they're.
Down Three ty johnson is on. The field we.
Know why he's their third. Down back he's also their best back in terms of. Pass PROTECTION.
But i Not Put james cook on the field as a.
Wide out he Was making you could argue he made more plays than anybody in, that game and he's not on the field for the last minute. AND change i would Argue Put james cook on the field on third down Along With. Ty johnson just split.
Him, out yeah she's no reason you couldn't do this opposite Slot Of.
Khalil a NO reason i got to go. Four wide he's one of. The, wides guess and let's look.
At it let's look at it.
This way what are you looking at in the course of, his season what's the number one hundred and ninety to two hundred and fifty third? Down snaps what's what would you say in a given season.
Tast, two hundred.
Two hundred, You, know so now he's on the field for two hundred, more plays but he's not playing the running. Back position maybe there isn't as much wearing tear and that's how he serves the team in a.
Greater way he had two hundred and thirty nine total touches, last year thirty three thirty two catch it receptions in two hundred and, Seven carries so two hundred thirty. Nine touches if you get another what one hundred touches out of him and gets it to three hundred and.
One, hundred snaps you're, Talking really you're not even talking, touches necessarily?
Are you these, Are, touches yeah two hundred and seven rushes, he, had right and he was on the field for many more snaps than the ones that he just got the ball, On right so he was out there when they were throwing It To khalil shakir and all, that too on, first down, second down all. That stuff so you get That much i'm talking about when he's got the ball in, his hands.
Would you? Notice it who would notice? It first.
Probably the other receivers and the running backs would get fewer opportunities that kind of. Thing us and who sits down when he Comes When ty johnson comes on the Field And james cook stays on, the field who sits down.
A?
Tight end?
Tight end maybe which one.
Or.
BOTH yeah i Mean.
The bills had one hundred and ninety three third down snaps. Last, year yeah so if he's on the Field With, ty johnson even for half, of those you're talking another ninety Snaps For james cook to make a play.
For you i'll say he gets thirty more touches out of that every third.
Of.
Those yeah so now now you look at his numbers and suddenly You Know james cook has.
Let, me see, HOLD on i was on the wrong.
Team there bill's had two hundred snaps on. Third down let's just say he plays half, of them gets one hundred, more snaps and let you said thirty more catches or thirty.
Touches of the football. Three touches now he's a sixty, catch, receiver yeah instead of a thirty two.
CATCH receiver, I mean i think that's a way to increase his usage in the offense without putting too much wear and tear.
On, HIM yeah i THINK it's i think.
IT'S viable, i mean if you, want To and i'll say, this too he, you know he's not gonna he's not gonna squawk At, having yeah, you know, more opportunity more opportunities. For, sure yeah and you'll you'll get a dynamic player out. Of it I'm not i'm not a verse to that.
AT all i want to see IT before i pay.
For, it okay and you can do that technically with the last year of his contract coming.
Up, here here sitting here in the, radio studio you can. Do.
That absolutely gotta take a, break here more of your. Phone calls when.
We return we may crack open the questions in the mail bag on the tweet sheet, as well so we'll get to some of those when we return Here On One, bill's live Presented By, Colida Health It's Buffalo. Bills radio, all right back Here On One, Bill's Live, Chris Brown steve tasker with you on An obl friday fan. Mail bag any question you got under the sun On, the Bills, the league, free agency the draft fire away at eight oh three oh five fifty eight five fifty two. Five fifty gonna dip into the mail bag on the, tweet sheet which is brought to You By Corgan, moving systems official equipment moving company To The. Buffalo bills, kevin asks why Not Pick jack Sawyer Of ohio state with the.
Early pick he may be The Next. MAX crosby i think that's a little.
Bit Strong jack sawyer is widely considered a late second early third, round pick.
A little Bit Maybe, max crosby.
A little bit, limited athletically and Maybe MORE.
John. A, cargo yeah and, he's well he's not even he's more of a linebacker than.
He is he's more of an outside guy in of three four, as well in my in, MY opinion i don't know if FOR sure i could be off the mark, in that, but yeah trying to transpose A current nfl player onto a draft prospect is always.
Better used as a metaphor.
Rather than a direct, comp or saying this guy is, that guy or this guy's exactly like, that guy because those exact replicas.
Don't Exist max rosby wasn't even that high of a.
Draft pick HE was i think a fifth round.
Draft choice so, you know you get the right guy in the, right atmosphere, and yeah all of a sudden he Does Become. Max crosby But He max crosby didn't Look Like max crosby when he came, Out right so.
THAT'S true i guess that's. My, point yeah and it's a.
Fair point i'm trying to just check really quick to SEE if i Can Find jack sawyer's test numbers from. The combine i'm trying to pull him, up HERE and i don't even know if he. Did everything to be honest, with, you.
Yeah it's.
It happens every year and it's natural to. DO that i, don't, know though you SEE something i. Don't see he's a, good player. No question Out Of ohio state made that great scoop and score against his old college roommate in the championship Game. Against texas other, THAN that i would never have known he was a college. Football player that's the ONE play i SAW and i.
WOULD like, I said i think he's widely projected to be a, late second early third, Round pick so, To me.
I'm not using my first rounder.
On, Him.
Sorry like that's just kind OF where i come down on it And what i've heard about HIM because i haven't gotten to all of the edge. RUSHERS yet, i mean, six four, two, sixty, okay great but a guy that's gonna win, with power not a, speed guy and usually the speed guys, go, Earlier right so, we'll see we'll see where he ends up and what. He BECOMES but i don't Know if i'm ready to Tab Him. MAX Crosby h, connor says what do you think was the Reason For dwayne carter's absence in the second half of. The season prior to, The injury he was starting. To flash once he, came back he saw, the field but then started being a. HEALTHY scratch i think he has a lot, of potential but he has a lot to prove.
This, OFFSEASON yeah i think.
We heard coach McDermott express some Disappointment In keon coleman's performance after his wrist injury kept him out, a month and how he did not seem to be able to pick up where he left off as his game was just starting to reach. Critical mass Dominated that. Seattle win if, you remember then the next week suffers the fractured wrist at the end Of the dolphins game and then really was not a non factor the rest of the season on offense For. THE bills I Think dwayne carter experienced some of that, as well and, not coincidentally also came off of rist injury and his.
Required surgery.
And if you think about, defensive linemen they are using their wrists on every, single snap, you know engage shed make.
A play i wonder if.
His ability to perform was compromised even after he. Came back i'm not saying they rushed him back by, any stretch but after you rehabilitate, the injury you also have to strengthen it to a point where you can play forty five fifty snaps. A game, and yes he was a, healthy scratch and it seemed as Though the bills sided with their veteran talent in that position more than.
Anything, else yeah it deserves to, be questioned.
No doubt.
We'll see how how he comes back. This year that's all you.
Can do. I'm certain i'm sure That the bills have a certain set of Expectations For dwayne carter that are probably very different than ours and much. More specific and we're not privy.
To that.
He made the fifty three and he stayed there, all year even through, The INJURY so i think they've got pretty high expectations.
For him got to take a, break here but when we Returned for hour, number two Our regular, friday visitors senior PRODUCER From, Nfl Films, greg cosel going to run through some of the defensive tackle prospects in this year's draft CLASS with us we'll get his film study reports when we return Here On One, bill's live Presented By.
Colida Health It's Buffalo. Bill's radio This This One bill's live Presented By.
Kalida health, all right here we are On, A Friday Brown, Steve Tasker One bills live and the second hour of the show On.
THE friday i mean it's only.
One thing senior PRODUCER From, Nfl Films, greg cozell joining us as we make our way positioned by a position through the twenty TWENTY Five nfl. Draft class we already did edge Rushers when greg joined us on set AT The nfl combine. Last Month, this friday we cover defensive tackles as we move on to the defensive Interior, and greg good to have you. With us, AS always i want to begin with a player that has been heavily mocked To. The bills STEVE and i aren't convinced he's gonna be there, at thirty But the michigan Defensive Tackle, kenneth grant who's actually conducting his pro day today up there In.
Ann.
Arbor, yeah well this is a really good. Dtackle class there's. There's many grant's a really interesting guy because, he's big but he's got pretty light feet for a. Big MAN and i think there's a lot more to his game than what he has shown up to. THIS point, i think believe it, or not he could become a pretty good pass rusher, in time.
But he.
Did not he does not play primarily as a big man, space eater even though he can.
Do that.
But he does control and displace interior o linemen and that's probably foundationally what you what you see. Him AS but i tell you the tape shows that he's got pretty, good athleticism, quick feed. Lateral movement he can make plays in the run game outside the confined space of where he, lines UP and i really thought there was enough there as a, pass rusher both from a power and, quickness standpoint to believe he could further develop. THAT trade I think i think there's a lot There With kenneth grant that remains to.
Be, developed yeah mainly when you look at him watch, HIM play, i mean forget the guys, you know, six whatever six six three three thirty because he does, move really. Really well he's an athlete even at, that size and that, gives you it gives you the idea that there's more in, the, tank right like with technique and some, you know all, that stuff the coaching up and then learning and all.
That that the guy's got a lot of very, high, CEILING right i feel.
THAT way, i, Mean look i'm sure the play from twenty twenty three that, went viral, of course was when he ran Down Key tron Allen From, penn state which again is a wonderfully. Athletic play he's not going to. Be doing hopefully he doesn't have to do that very much at any time IN. The nfl, but no that's THE way I felt steve. WATCHING him, i mean he's got pretty light feet for a, big man, you know in an, ODD way i almost feel that he's as good or a better Prospect Than mason graham in an. Odd way but we'll see how all this. Plays out this is a great. DTACKLE class i had Someone at combine tell me he wouldn't be surprised if twenty defensive tackles went in the first. Three rounds so it's really what. You want we Know the bills. Want size they're not very big at the, detackle position so they're looking, for size, and Obviously as brownie, just said ONE reason I think grant is mocked to, the bills assuming he might be there at. That point is he does give you size and mass and girth in the middle of your. Defensive front, All right.
So another guy you know that's been ranked relatively high is the old Miss Prospect. Walter nolan only three, h five so not quite as girthy As A kenneth grant, per se but, long build.
Long arms what do you see? WITH him.
I personally Believe That walter nolan is the best defensive tackle prospect in this. Draft class he is a power. Three technique he is really. Really strong he has numerous plays IN the sec that were Reminiscent Of jalen carter's Tape at georgia where he just had that transcendent confined space strength and power where he just physically moved and displaced. Offensive lineman and he's got quickness to him. As well he played low with excellent leverage AND what i call short stroke strength. And power he's got a twitched up explosiveness. To HIM as, i said he's a power. Three TECHNIQUE and i thought watching his TAPE because i watched him last summer when he Was AT texas A and m and then he transferred this Year To old miss and they had a really good defense with a lot of players both at the combine and who will. Get DRAFTED and I thought nolan to me was the best de tackle prospect in this draft class based.
On, tape wow there, you GO because i.
HAD him i noticed what.
You did he's a.
POWERFUL player, i mean the guy, is STRONG and i certainly that always trans late to the next level in. Some levels and, you know the only thing you don't Know Is kenny win with Technique And kenny win with some fluidity and that kind. Of thing, but, man yeah he was at times he looked like a man among boys when he was on the d Line At old miss this. LAST year, i mean you rarely saw guy's break tackles. On him he forces a lot of fumbles because his hands are. So strong i'm a little shocked that you had him. That high, but man oman THAT he i noticed what. You noticed he's a. STRONG guy I mean.
I, just yeah that's THE way. I felt, i mean as you, GUYS know i don't necessarily, make LISTS but i, just thought, you know just, Watching him AND as, I said i watched him, last SUMMER and I watched i, don't know seven eight games, THIS year i thought that he was the guy that really truly stood out, to me. You know and ONE thing i, will Say and i've learned this from talking, to people, you KNOW and i try to learn all. The time, YOU know i watch a ton, of tape but, YOU know i keep trying to learn more. And More, and steve you'll probably the echo, of this having played in. The league if you don't have a real strong power element to, your game particularly is, a dtackle it's really hard to be a. GREAT player, i mean, you know there's a lot of guys that. Are quick we talk about three technique guys with one gap penetration and, all that and, that's great but, you know if you don't have a power element to, your game which, HE does, I mean i thought his power element was the best of any d tackle in this, draft class then it's really hard to be a consistently strong force in the middle of.
A defense another guy that AT least i think can win with power Is the, oregon guy The Former michigan State Transfer.
Derek harmon what are your thoughts on his?
Skill, set yeah ain't going one year's player really because he was kind of a rotational Player At. Michigan state this was the first year he really played all. The time he's got a pretty. LONG body i think he's a guy that is. Still developing he certainly has the traits that you. Look for he's got. TREMENDOUS length i think he's over, six four so, you know he, has what he has what. You want BUT as, i said my sense was watching him that there's still developmental aspects to, his game, you know and then then you have, to decide, you know where you stand. ON that, i mean, you know when is he going? To develop is he ready to play as? A rookie, you know because if You're drafting look, they're drafting h what, is it, thirtieth? First, THIRTIETH yeah i mean in an, ideal world you would want if you draft a D, tackle brownie you would want this guy to come in and not necessarily play seventy snaps, a game but certainly be a meaningful part of. Your rotation now he's got everything. You want he's over, sixty four he's got, tremendous army he's got a. Ridiculous wingspan he is a very, athletic player and, he definitely, you know has showed the ability to be physical, up front where he had a real good feel for precise hand placement to control and, displace alignment because very much that's a function of where you place your hands as much as just. Sheer POWER so i think there's a. Lot there i'm just not sure he would be ready. Year one he may, well BE and i could. Be wrong that's just.
My, sense yeah give us a little bit of your take on. The Prospect joshua farmer Out Of. Florida, State ah he's.
Actually one of my favorite guys. As well and again by, saying that, you know as you, GUYS know i, don't necessarily, you know make a lister or do a. Mock draft former's ANOTHER guy i watched last summer, as Well so i've seen a lot of. His tape he's about six three three, oh five tremendously. LONG arms i mean his, ARM length i believe it's thirty five inches if memory serves. Me correctly and this guy plays, with strong, heavy hands quick. Active feet he's got movement trades to burst both vertically. AND laterally i thought there were many snapshots in his tape of just dominant snaps where he showed both, short area quickness off, the ball he. Could redirect he's got that short stroke power to strike and jar and control. AND displace i Really, liked FARMER and i think there's pass rush. To develop, but yeah this, guy again, you know without making, A list i think that he's he's right up there among the better of the of the d tackles in this.
Draft class it's just such a loose athlete for a player.
His size that's the thing that's so surprising, about him, watching him like he should not have that kind of fluidity to his body that.
He does that's.
And, you're, right brownie but at, his core at, his core he's a, power player even though he's a really good athlete for.
That Size, all right one GUY that i had trouble coming down on in terms OF whether i like him or not is the Guy From, Ohio State.
Tyleague williams.
Part of my issue, there was EVEN though i would see him push the pocket, pretty frequently he wasn't the guy finishing. THE plays i don't know if that's a that's an unreasonable expectation, to.
Have, but yeah you, tell, ME.
Yeah I Like.
TYLER williams i mean in just in terms of traits you know when it comes to, d tackles particularly where he played At At, ohio state where he was not necessarily, you know a pass rusher, per se and very often he was not on the field on. Third DOWN but i think that he's got the ability to win with quickness off. THE ball i think. HE'S strong i think he's another guy, with, strong heavy strong and. Heavy hands but, you know the ONE thing i, would SAY and i guess maybe it plays off, your POINT is i felt at times he didn't show those traits as often as you would like to see because you know he. Has them so, maybe that's, you know maybe that's what you're. Referring to but there's no question that this guy at his best can be a dominant player on.
The inside last one, FOR me i want to talk to You About.
ALFRED collins i didn't know who this guy was until we put him on our List and brownie's kind of. GOT him i started. Watching him he he's got some. SERIOUS traits, i mean the, guy's big.
He's tall he's.
GOT length i think he might measure better than, he plays but. He is if you want to see a guy get off the, bus first this is.
The, guy.
Yeah six six three thirty two arm length is close to thirty. Five inches, you're right he's he's an imposing. Detackle prospect he has dominant snaps in the, run game he's got that short, stroke power he's instant force when, he strikes he's got that confined. Space strength. You know one of the issues with, him though and, you, know again this is a tough thing, to fix as he does have a tendency to come off the, ball high and that's a hard thing to. Truly fix but there are. Dominant snaps he's not really a pass rusher at. This point he would need meaningful development in, that area and that part is a significant work. In progress but there are traits there. To unlock but, you know my only concern, with him and, believe me there were plays that, you went oh, my god this guy is. Just dominant but it's just when you when you raise up and you play a, little high no matter how powerful, you are it's just it. Doesn't matter you.
Lose, Everything okay with that, in mind the Last guy i've got is kind of at the other end of that spectrum because he measured at the combine at just six two two Ninety One omar norman Lot.
From tennessee is he strictly just, you know? A three because, of That.
Possibly i'd like him. A lot, you know it's odd that when You, watch tennessee they play so many, defensive linemen so he doesn't play a lot. Of snaps my sense is that has to do an il on. The transfer with, the portal you get all these four and five stars in and if you don't play, them early. They leave so, you know you put these guys out there that just to give. Him snaps when he played low with, good, leverage boy he looked really. REALLY good, i mean he could play, with power he could play. With quickness there's a natural quickness to, His. Movement brownie but, you're right he's six two two, ninety five does have, long ARMS and i think that the athleticism. IS there i think he could develop into a really good pass rusher IN the nfl because he. Can bend for a guy, that size he can flatten his rush path as a, pass rusher which we normally talk about with defensive ends and. Age players but he can. Do that, SO again i don't know if that's the kind of player they're looking for because he's he's not, really big, you know you don't view him as a big time. Space eater he's under three. Hundred pounds, YOU know i don't know if they view him as being somewhat similar in many ways To An, ed oliver, you know that kind, of player because he's lighter FOR a. D TACKLE but i think there's a lot There, with norman, a lot and you didn't see a ton of it because they rotated SO many d Linemen.
At, tennessee yeah how much do you think there is in a guy who gets limited snaps because of, Whatever situation maybe not because of his production or because of, his ability but because of, you know the culture that the, nil situation the, transfer portal all that. Other stuff how difficult is it to quantify the ceiling versus the floor and where these guys, could go where they? Will go.
That's a. GREAT question, i mean, you, know look a lot of these guys are going to come in and they're not going to play sixty seventy snaps. A game and rarely did he even do that? In college, YOU know i watch a lot of these players who are, you know high, level prospects and they don't really. Do that there's very few. That do so sometimes it's hard to get a field because if you, come in if, YOU'RE drafted, i mean let's Say It's. Kenneth grant, you know eventually you want him to be a starting defensive tackle who's going to play sixty snaps. A game that's what. You want you're not drafting a guy in the first round at a position of need to play twenty snaps. A game down. The road that may be the case, year one as he gets his feet wet and learns the league and, gains experience, But, overall steve you're not drafting, guys early first second round players to play twenty snaps. A game so sometimes it's hard to know if a guy plays twenty five snaps a game, in college what his game would be if he has to play, fifty snaps will he still be able to play at the. Same level that's a hard question.
To, answer yeah and, last one, Real, QUICK greg, i mean just on your description some of these guys where you ran, PAST you i don't want to put words in, your mouth but it does sound as though you feel like a Player Like, kenneth grant Maybe Even josh farmer could be better pros than they were college players because maybe they haven't put it all.
Together, YET.
Yeah I mean i try to think, That way BROWNIE when i, watch tape, YOU know i try, because ultimately what are. We doing we're projecting and transitioning to. The league so, you know some of these kids are twenty, years old they're twenty one. Years old some. Are, older obviously we know guys play, you know six seven years now DUE to COVID and i guess that's about. To end but some guys are older coming into. The league but, you know when a guy is twenty or twenty one and you see his trades and, you think what's he going to look like in three or four years with, you, know coaching, with development with experience at the. Highest LEVEL and i try to think, that WAY and i think your. POINTS correct i think that the two players you mentioned to my way, of thinking, you know have trades that can be developed and they could become better players that they are sending. Type, players yeah and.
That's that's why some guys get moved up the board because of what they could. Potentially do as, we know upside is always something that will move somebody up aboard, Right, Quick greg.
Thanks as always for. The time appreciate it and we'll catch up with you.
Next, week, appreciated guys thanks. So much.
That's Great, co sale senior PRODUCER From nfl films, joining us going over some. Defensive tackles then this year's, draft class at least.
Some of the higher.
Rated ones there are, several more and, you know we dealt with some of the higher. Rated guys there are some true like one technique slash noseguard run stuffers that are in this class, as well that go three three.
Forty, five well we didn't even get.
To whether we haven't even touched on the top guy in most, people's boards a Guy Named mason graham who also Played at Michigan With. Kevin Grant mason graham is. Long, gone yeah that's why we. Didn't bother we didn't even bother talking. About him the rest of, these guys, you know well you talk, about them most of them are a handful, of them and we're gonna.
Be gone But That dion walker Kid, from kentucky he goes three. Forty five You Got, jamari Caldwell Who's derek, harmon's teammate he goes. Three forty there are some space eaters in this class, as well which is why it's such a ballyhooed defensive. Tackle class You heard greg, say it there could be twenty defensive tackles off the board by the end of day.
TWO alone i mean.
That's you're talking. Ninety picks twenty could be. DEFENSIVE tackles i mean that's that's a bounty of riches at.
The, position Yeah and i'm it's getting to the point where everybody picks their guys.
Because of the.
Same percentages there's not that many guys out there the weigh three hundred and forty pounds that can outrun. Most people they're just it's, a rarity so they know they're they got to get them while they can.
GET them i really would not be surprised if, you Know the bills take one early and take another, one later and and one might be that space eater and the other one might be more of a position flex guy that can also push the pocket. With regularity Because to, GREG'S point i think it's. Bang on they need size because their biggest defensive Tackle Is Dai kwan jones at three twenty and he's thirty four, Years, old like you better have another size answer, There.
Right and there's guys. Out there and you mentioned a Guy Like zeke Biggers From georgia tech who's three twenty eighty six, to six THE guy i Mentioned, From texas.
So you know they're all, you Know The. Alfred collins there's guys like that in.
This draft and sometimes you get these guys and they're. Just guys, you know they're. Not players the higher, they get that's why, you look you're gonna, look good but you, gotta, Play man you got to be able.
To play.
It's a hard balance, to draw and they're hard guys, to find and once you, get them you got to make sure they're the right kind. Of, guy yeah, you know nobody wants to watch a guy lazy his way through a. Football season but.
Whether they keep all ten of, their picks or let's just say they even, HAVE eight i could see two of those picks being.
Defensive tackles knowing it's in such, PLENTIFUL supply i would tend to think that there are going to be opportunities to take more.
Than ONE and i think they need to add more.
THAN one, I mean i know you got this free agent visit that's reportedly going to Happen With, LeKi fotu and maybe that provides a stopgap measure of sorts to fortify the position from a. Depth perspective but you also need to be thinking long term at the, position too because this is probably the last year You See daikwon jones In a. Bill's uniform, and also let's not forget that you're going to be without two of the free agent signees on your defensive front because of suspensions for. Six GAMES so i think drafting two defensive tackles is a very, realistic possibility and an edge rusher before the draft. Is OVER so i think you could see as many as three picks going to defensive line For the bills in, this draft provided they don't do much of anything else in.
Free, agency yeah but the, problem, is well even if you get, these guys you Remember the Bills Drafted daryl johnson a few. Years ago he was a nice, seventh rounder seventh, round pick a great, special teamer but he was here and then got Traded, to carolina ended Up.
In carolina.
It's a hard it's still a hard roster. To make they were IN The Afc championship game. Last year even the backups have a resume now they were back up on a playoff team that got to the championship round of.
The playoffs it's a hard roster.
To, make.
YEAH even i think if you pick those guys in, the draft there's no guarantee they can't they can beat out a guy, like this the guy who's in town For, The bills. LUCKY fot, i mean there's no guaranteeing beat that guy, Out.
Right but the, Fact Remains jordan phillips is out there in, free agency so Too Is. Quentin jefferson no longer on. The roster so the position from a numbers standpoint is. Relatively thin if it stays, that way it enhances the chances of, these guys even if they're An early day, three pick to make.
The squad so we'll have to see how it all. Shakes out i'm.
Gonna take a, break here but we come back more of your questions From The obel friday fan, mail bag both on the tweetsheet and on the phone lines at eight, oh three, oh five fifty one, eighty eight five, fifty two five. Point fifty anything On, the bills, the draft, free agency you, Name it we're here to. Answer it On One bill's live Presented By kill Out.
Of Health It's Buffalo. Bills radio back here On One, Bill's.
Live, Chris Brown steve tasker with you gonna crack OPEN The obl friday fan mail bag once again as we look at some of your questions that you might have, in mind and this One from adam, who Says If kenneth grant falls to, twenty One should buffalo trade up for him.
If.
It's, FEASIBLE yeah i don't have a problem giving up a couple of, draft picks even, A player, SO yes i would, say yes. Twenty one Those high it's gonna take a lot to get.
A lot to get.
Up there it might be like three draft picks and, a player or even a high draft pick and, a player two high draft picks and. A player that's a long way to jump in the first round OF an. Nfl draft from thirty to twenty one is a.
Long way it's.
Very. Expensive yeah more often, than not especially in. Round One brandon bean's moves up the board have been incremental. IN nature i don't think he's moved up more than, five spots and with the exception Of The josh, allen draft in which he moved up precipitously in a series of moves to get up to seven To take josh and then made another move back into round one To Get.
Tremaine edmonds you're also talking about trading with a team Like The, pittsburgh steelers.
Who might need. Defensive line you might well want.
That guy, so yeah that's it's a, big ask, no Question and i'll and just for the sake, of It the steelers have six draft picks in this, draft already, twenty one, eighty, three one, twenty, three one fifty six is their, first four so you could probably throw one at them to. Get them, you know inside of, eighty three you'd give him your thirtieth and give him that fifty six or sixty.
Two pick.
Maybe that gets. YOU close i don't have to look at the, value chart but that. It's expensive, it's expensive and you got to have two teams that want another team that wants to do that.
With you a move of that, size caliber however you want to, frame it it's it's not a, small jump it's it's a, respectable jump and you would have to part with. A, lot now you may have players on your roster that you deem to, be expendable and if you want to lump a, player in maybe you don't have to give up as much draft capital to. Get there so that's something else to keep. IN mind i suppose it doesn't just have to be draft capital.
You're moving it could be a player.
As well, susie asks one, year contracts do they automatically make the fifty three man roster they get to take the money and run if, they don't? And penalties who decides if they are accepted? Or declined, ALL right i will handle the. First question you handle. The second one one year contracts they sign. The contract if the money is, fully, guaranteed well, then yeah they would get to take the money if they didn't make.
The roster.
But you don't start getting paid until you're on the roster and you're. Playing games your first check Comes the monday after the, first game and so on and. So forth you get paid weekly that one year's salary for over the course of.
Eighteen weeks, so.
Now if you are a vested veteran and you're on the roster passed, week one You know tuesday of week two that money you, get paid even if you. Are released so that would be an example of taking the money. And running but that's why a lot, of teams and we've seen this exercise before they sign a player to a one. Year contract they're not one hundred percent certain they're gonna need them the, whole year but they want them on. The roster they cut the player at final cutdown day and then wait Till the tuesday after week one and then sign, them back presumably to the, same money but then they're not on the hook if they're a vested veteran for the rest of, the year.
And it's up to the player whether he accepts that deal. Or, not right it will be playing week to week with no guarantee that it'll get a second or third or.
Fourth week now you address accepting or, declining penalties and who handles that on a, Game.
Day well it's usually.
Pretty straightforward the head coach, does it and there's only less than a handful of instances when you decline, The, penalty right you always take the penalty unless it behooves you, not to which. Is rare so the head coach, just, says yeah take the, penalty now like on a third down and long if they get a if, the offense if you're, on defense and the offense gets a penalty on a third and long and they, miss it you're gonna decline the penalty that, you know so you're not Gonna let you're not gonna give him another shot at making the, Fourth, Down right things like that, Are easy but it's the head coach, who decides and he's also got a game management guy also who's where if there is, a nuance that's the guy who's in charge of keeping track, of that and he'll he'll chime in the head coach, and, say hey you might want to.
Think about.
Declining this because of the clock at the end of the half or field position, or yeah field position or field, goal length that kind.
Of, thing yeah get them to.
Fourth down but it's rare that you see teams decline. Penalties anyway that's really what you're. Talking about if there's ever a penalty and you think you should, decline it that's when somebody's got chime in or it's usually pretty straightforward as.
To.
Why yeah the only time it's not.
Rocket sign the only time you see it with regularity is if your opponent's already backed up down in, distance wise like it's a third and nineteen, for example and then they get a holding penalty on top.
Of, that well you're not.
Doing that you're going to, Force down you're going to decline, the, Penalty right so that's kind of where it comes into play more than.
Anything, else yeah it's they call them penalties for. A reason it's usually hurts the other team and you.
Take It mighty mouse on the fan mail bag question asks can you guys give us a take On Why jordan phillips isn't back in the. Building yet veteran player and has only been brought back a couple of times after he was a released by one team and b practice squad released. By another they got him Off the dallas practice squad after he was released from that practice squad coming back from. An injury to me, and look We, love jordan but truth, be told he's been more of a stop gap addition to this roster the last couple of times he has. Been here and so with that, IN mind i will submit to you this he's not on the roster NOW because i Think the bills want to see what they can scoop up at the position in.
THE draft.
I will, say, this though if they don't come up with everything that they want in. THE draft i think he's a potential May or june signing in. Free, agency YEAH and i think and he's said we've all. Heard it he said he's not playing in Place. Except buffalo.
True. Or Not the bills probably took him at his word and, there saying you, know what if, he's wait we. Can wait we can wait, on him and they. Probably will he is a he's a. Quintessential guy that happens every once in a while when you get a team who treats somebody right and they. Appreciate It jordan phillips has been a plus for this that here. In, studio yeah he has been a plus for this organization ever since they picked. Him up When The miami dolphins released him as a second. Round pick he was not. Happy there he told us as much when he was sitting right next to me in this studio as to why. That was and he Came to buffalo and it was a it was a drink of fresh water after a. Long drought and he loves it here and they like. Him too but, you know at this point of, his career he's on he's on the, back side and they know that they they can call him when they, need him and he probably told him as much and the need has not. Arisen yet that's that's why he's not in the building. Right now if, They, had yeah they'd love to have that. Guy back he's not going to cost him an arm and a leg and he'll handle the contractors however they want. Him to so YEAH that i think the reason that he's not in the building yet is because they haven't needed. Him yet when, they do you can bet they know.
His.
Number yeah speaking of, free agents there are a couple of signings Here on friday around.
The league it Looks Like brandon cooks is going Back To.
New orleans he's played for a handful of teams as we know in, this league but he is going to sign a, two year thirteen million dollar deal With. The saints he played last Year, For dallas so one of the more notable name receivers still out there on the market going to go back To the saints and play. For them and then offensive, line wise looks like veteran Offensive Tackle, trent brown who Played for cincinnati, last year is going to sign With, the texans who desperately need a left tackle after Trading Away. Laramie tunseell so somebody needs to explain to Me how houston thinks they're a better offensive Line With trent Brown Over. LARAMIE tunzell.
I don't.
Get it that seems dumb. To Me laramie tunsell is not That does that was.
Rather, blunt yes.
Remember if you don't Know Who, laramie tunsel and he's a guy that had the gas mask, on today. Was drafted somebody sabotaged, his career really blatantly tried. To sabotage but he's. Played well he is not only has he, played well he is a stalwart in the. Locker room he is a leader and a man. Among men guy's rally. To him he is an outstanding human being despite what you might have thought about him after that.
Draft debacle.
He's a dude and has been since he. Got DRAFTED so, i, THINK yeah i don't know what. They're doing obviously it must have. Been, ECONOMIC.
Yeah, i mean Just what houston has done is they've moved Out, of tunsel who was making, big money and they Have Signed trent. Brown now but they Also Signed cam robinson earlier this week Away, from MINNESOTA.
And i believe both are going to be one.
Year deals so clearly there was an economic part to, this equation and, they figured let's get two. Veteran TACKLES but i will submit to, You. This Steve the jets tried to do that, last year signed two veteran Tackles And morgan Moses And, tyron smith and neither of them got through a seventeen.
Game season it did not go well.
Exactly what we said was. Gonna happen you got a forty year old quarterback. Or thereabouts you got a forty year old quarterback coming Off an, achilles injury with two very ancient TACKLES by nfl standards who were. Fragile themselves none of. Those three if one of those three, goes down so Did the jets? Hopes offensively and, they did and. They Did now i'll, Say this say what you Want About aaron rodgers and all the fun we have at him and the barbs we throw. At him the guy started seventeen games. Last year he came back and played and played.
Well enough twenty, four touchdowns. EIGHT picks, i, think yeah.
On a team that, was struggling so and that's putting. It, Nice yeah i'm Okay With. AARON rodgers i Think The pittsburgh. Steelers are he's the exact right guy. For them he gives them some credibility at the position and enough that they can make they can win a lot of games.
With, him yeah we'll have to see where.
That goes as we told you at the top of, the show if you're just, Joining Us aaron rodgers Visiting the steelers', facility today supposedly meeting With Owner, ar rooney the second Head Coach, mike tomlin General Manager. Omar khan whether it gets to contract discussions remains to, be seen although it's been reported that that.
Possibility exists as you would naturally. Think anyway.
Whether something's wrapped up by the end of, the, weekend though we'll just have to wait. And See but STEVE and i were discussing this earlier in the Week, Between pittsburgh cleveland And The New. York giants pittsburgh's the best possible situation you can walk into as A.
Veteran qb.
Right now it's not ideal because they have some on line holes, to fill but it's certainly got weapons more advanced Than. The giants he got weapons and culture and expectation.
AND support, i mean. Let's go that's that's what.
You want the support you Get, in pittsburgh in the locker room and on the field is better than any of the other.
Three spots gotta take a, break here one final segment to go here ON a Obl fan friday. Mail bag if you have a question fired off, at us we'll answer the last few that we have in the queue when we. Return Here On One, bill's live presented By co lo Out, Of Health It's Buffalo. Bills radio, all right a couple of final Questions For One BILL'S Lives obl friday Fan. Mail bag andrew asked up and hearing multiple rumors Of the bills in serious talks With The Sante.
Samuel jr and, if so what kind of deal are we? LOOKING at.
I wouldn't be surprised If the bills are, in on, you. KNOW conversation i don't know that for. A fact we did see the same reports you. Saw that you know they were one of the teams interested In A, sante SAMUEL and i don't think he has signed anywhere to, this point so he's still. OUT there i Know the saints are another team that was interested, in him but they've been spending some money here, of late so maybe they moved on, From that.
So we'll have.
TO see i think clearly the reason he hasn't signed yet is he believes his VALUE, is x and all the other teams that are interested in him believe his value, is why and that's why a deal hasn't come. TO fruition i think it's going to get to a point Where A Sante samuel junior may just have to accept a one year deal and then go back into the free agent market, next year hoping he blows it up in terms. Of production and if that's, THE case i think the chances are even Greater the bills could land him because now you're not committing giant money on a long. Term contract but we'll have to see how it all. Shakes, loose yeah, he's well he's.
Twenty five, OH.
Yeah i mean he's entering the prime of.
His career.
Not a.
Big corner not the kind, of corner not the kind of corner body, type Wise the bills typically go after.
To play on. The, outside well if you get him for the, right, price though? Who cares as long as you can play.
THE position i think you know he, Can Play so, I'm Yeah i'm i'm in.
On that i'll listen. To it i'm not gonna You, gotta well here's the, problem though.
One.
Year, deal okay you're gonna Give A sante samuel a four year deal worth well as a number, seventy five, eighty million four, year deal, eighty million twenty million, a year whatever. You, want well there's a guy on the other side.
Of him now it's harder to.
Resign, him yeah you gotta sign. That, guy yeah you Gotta Sign christian. Benford back you haven't done. That, Yet yeah so now you're gonna. Have two you have, two corners one making twenty four for eighty and then the other one making five for. Ninety five that's the rub with with sixty five guaranteed or something. LIKE that i mean that you're you're you're standing in a hole and you're still holding the shovel. Digging, it yep, you know don't do it makes. It harder so that's the ONLY problem i see with. That, scenario mark you got to draft the guy so you can, get.
Him yeah cheap for? Four, years yeah.
Maybe five mark Asks are Hoyt And ogan joe be able to attend team meetings and workouts with the team for the first six weeks of, the season not for the first, four weeks the last two weeks of.
THE suspension i believe.
They can they can definitely be, in MEETINGS and I Believe brandon bean said they can be practicing because there is a ramp up.
Period that the players have to be. Allotted there they can't just come out of the woods and.
Start playing they are and they are all the, way there all the way through, the preseason preseason games, As, well yes and.
Training camp that's it for us. This week we'll catch you back Here on monday.
At one have a.
Good weekend
