A federal appeals court on Wednesday granted execution stays to death row inmates Julius Jones and John Marion Grant. Jones was set for execution Nov. 18 and Grant was set for execution Thursday [Oct. 28]. Three other inmates had asked the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver for stays, also, but the judges there did not grant or deny their requests.

Columnist Berry Tramel notes that Bob Bowlsby keeps using the word “betrayal” when discussing the announced departure of OU and Texas to the Southeastern Conference. Betrayal is a powerful word. But you certainly can understand the Big 12 commissioner’s reason for using it. Same as you can understand why the Sooners and Longhorns are leaving.

The Oklahoma high school cross country state championship races are set for Saturday at Edmond Santa Fe High School. The Class 6A girls race will begin at 8:30 a.m. The other races will follow throughout the day.
